I don't get it! Gantry 5 means 1 layout per page?

    • HI,

I hope I am wrong about this. But now with Gantry 5 does it mean that I need to create a layout per page of my site?

So one layout for the Front page with all the particles and all the other oddly named stuff on it, then another LAYOUT for my contact form, and another for each different menu item?

So Gantry 5 templates are not assigned globally to all existing menus? You need to recreate Gantry 4 layouts using the laborious process of making a Gantry 5 layout per menu item..adding all the default elements to them such as navigation bars etc.

      ??

    • You'll be relieved to hear that you are wrong - no that's not the case at all. I don't know which template you are looking at though?

You could have one single outline (layout) ahared for all pages of your site. What you would mostly have on that layout is "module position" particles - in this way it would be very much like Gantry 4 in that you would assign module to module positions. On the other hand you could have an outline assigned to a specific page with no module positions at all on the layout - i.e. particles can be just dragged directly on to the layout. In real-world scenarios the reality will be some where between those two extremes.

Callisto was our first G5 template and it does probably have too many outlines (we were learning too at that stage), but if you look at the more recent templates (e.g. Kraken) then they have very few outlines (the same outline is used for many pages).

In Gantry 5 (just like in Gantry 4) you can make a template the "default" template and that is the outline that will be used by all menu items unless you specifically assign another outline instead.

I encourage you to look at our recent Gantry 5 templates - they are much easier to understand and should answer your questions.

      Regards, Mark.

HI phew! I am using Salient right now..

I am still using Epsilon on my live site and testing Salient in SPECIAL perms.

So is a best practice to duplicate the look and feel of my G4 template as much as I can, then assign that to ALL menu items, then after that begin creating duplicates of that to gain my multi language functionality back?

    • You're wanting to do a lot all in one go so I can understand why you are getting a little frustrated and confused. First of all i'd say to load yourself a local rocketlauncher copy of salient that you can refer to and get more familiar with. Also, whilst Gantry 4 and Gantry 5 can co-exist in the same joomla instance quite happily it may well cause greater confusion for you (especially since installing a Gantry 5 template will install an additional menu and manke it and the template both the default). So, for this reason I encourage you to clone your site elsewhere and do you development/testing work there.

Now on to the process that I would take to migrate from your Gantry 4 template to a Gantry 5 one...

      1. Create a new outline in Gantry 5 (call it whatever you wish).
      2. use the "load" button on the layout to load the most similar layout (Gantry 4 preset) to what you are using in your Gantry 4 template.
      3. Study the layout and make refinements to it for any missing module positions that you might require.
      4. ensure that there is a menu particle on the layout in the section that you require and also ensure that it is using the menu that you wish to use. Also ensure that there is a "mobile menu" particle in the offcancas section too (this is where the mobile menu opens when there is no longer room to display the full menu).
      5. ensure that there is a "page content" particle on your layout (this is where all joomla component output will be rendered - e.g. an article, blog, contact form, etc).
      6. Assign this outline to ONE of your menu items (preferably a test one) so that you can see your content.
      7. you can assign each of your menu items one at a time to this outline and test that your content shows correctly.
      8. Multilingual is done slightly differently in Gantry 5 - so you do need to read the tutorial on how it should be done correctly http://docs.gantry.org/gantry5/tutorials/multilingual-site
      9. once you have all you menu item migrated to use the Gantry 5 template then you can uninstall the Gantry 4 template and Gantry 4 and change the correct menu item to be the "default" for your site.

The above are basic guidelines only - you will inevitably have to do some more styling and configuration to get your site to look as you would wish.

      I hope that helps.

      Regards, Mark.

    • OK,

Since I already mentioned I have this on my site now and testing under special perms the first part about making a local site is not relevant to my case. It's too late to do that.

You say load a most similar G4 preset. What if you can't? I still maintain that G4 to G5 is not covered well enough for a case like this either here on the forum or in the all mighty documentation.

Bottom line is that Gantry 5 is being touted as being so great and it is quite obvious that it falls short and has MANY of us ticked off. It is hardly easier to use than Gantry 4, it has made huge parts of Joomla that we are familiar with largely redundant. And this documentation of yours is a joke. It SHOULD have been created from the perspective of going from the old to the new, instead of just simply show what Gantry 5 can do. It would have been better to experience it that way than get thrown into the deep end.

Why are so many people saying they are not continuing with their subscriptions? Should this not be a concern for all of you? Or doesn't it matter?

      We PAY for this remember...

You asked for advice and that is what I have given. I suggested the best way to do a migration from a Gantry 4 based template. You are of course free to do this your own way but don't forget that other members read these topics too so it might be of benefit to them if not to yourself.

Why can't you? I'd like to understand what your difficulty is so that I can assist you. With Gantry 5 the "Gantry 4" presets pretty much cover most of the template layouts from Gantry 4 - if there are any module positions missing then you can easily drag and drop a module position onto the layout? I will pass your comments on to our documentation specialist too as he is keen to have feedback about how our documentation can be improved http://www.rockettheme.com/forum/gantry-framework/248143-expanding-on-gantry-s-documentation

      We PAY for this remember...

Gantry 5 is a brand new framework built from the ground up and is our strategic platform going forward. In our experience, those that invest a little time into learning Gantry 5 soon realise the power it offers and would not go back. Yes, there are people that are initially daunted by the change but they quickly come to love what we've done. If you have a read through the forums topics you will see that there are plenty of people that absolutely love Gantry 5. Of course we want to see people renewing their subscriptions, that is our business after all - and they are doing just that.

Finally let me add that we're not compelling you to go to Gantry 5, If you are happy with Gantry 4 and it's templates (which is by far the bulk of our porfolio of templates) then that's great - carry on using Gantry4, that is also why you pay your subscription. We will continute to provide support for Gantry 4 and it's templates for the foreseeable future.

      Regards, Mark.

    • I wrote the Gantry 5 documentation, as well as RocketTheme's template documentation. Please accept my sincere apology for it not meeting your standards, and understand that documentation is not complete. It is a continual work in progress involving hundreds of pages, updates, and more. I'm one person, and this isn't my only responsibility.

I posted a thread (linked in MrT's response) some time ago asking for any and all feedback on documentation to which I received absolutely zero response as of the end of last week. Your mentioning loading the presets being a hangup is helpful, and we do have the process covered here . However, keeping your feedback (which you're the first person I've seen give) in mind, I will work to expand on it for G4 users.

Bottom line, I can't improve on something if I am not receiving any feedback on it. If you feel our documentation is a joke, then please let me know what you're getting caught on, and how you would improve on it.

Also, our documentation is open source, and anyone and everyone is free to add to it or suggest additional content and/or changes just as they are to Gantry 5 itself.

Again, your feedback is valid. Gantry documentation continues to grow and evolve, and your feedback is absolutely vital to that happening.

    • I think it's safe to say that we all process things differently. One type of person might look at a change and see a dissapointing imperfect scenario, where another might see a bold effort toward moving in a new direction... a direction that will, after a short while, reposition a technology business and it's users in an environment that will help grow their businesses exponentionally. I tend to be the latter of the two. Gantry 5 is an exciting change - I work in both Joomla (preferrably) and Wordpress. I am looking forward to using one similar method for both platforms. Gantry 5 represents a lot of work, committment and accomplishment. It's the user end (customers) that need to support Rockettheme so they can continue to grow the product. We need to be advocates not critics... sometimes that means being strong and honest about the user end experience, but personally speaking, there is no win for anyone by being overly negative. Let's all work together, and help the developers continue on this path by supporting them. They have hugely impacted my business for years with amazing products and even better support, and I for one will be glad to renew my membership once again when the time comes.
