Well they're really totally different systems, so you could disregard any Joomla knowledge you have, won't help in the slightest! Our extensions make it a lot easier to customize a store, and the forum is very busy now, so you can easily get help in there with stuff. We've a lot of Magento n00bs over there too, so you wouldn't feel left out

I was checking VirtueMart ecommerce Joomla Template, what advantages and disadvantages have against Magento?
The way Magento shows the product is very attractive but I find it too square, is it possible to modify the shape of the product to a more portrait kind?
Regarding VirtueMart vs Magento, main thing to note is that VirtueMart is an extension for a CMS that lets you have some store functions, and Magento is a full blown store. You can get a better idea of the main differences here -

It really comes down to the size of the store - if it's only a few products, then maybe VirtueMart might be the way to go as you already have experience with Joomla. But if it's for a lot of products, you'll want something more dedicated to ecommerce, so Magento is definitely the way to go in that case.
You can use any size images, and our ProductView extension allows you to set the image size on the main product page, whilst our CategoryView extension allows you to set the image size for the category pages.
