Vermilion for WP Never Updated. Why?

Posted 8 years 9 months ago
    • Not just any available theme would do. I'm venting my frustration after committing man hours and broad-based branding around my chosen theme and now regretably being forced to start over from scratch.

Vermillion for WP has never been updated since 2014 and remains ver. 1.0. Yet one must buy the theme after having already installed in a live environment during active membership. I didn't renew my expensive membership because I didn't get some bugs resolved before expiry. I was stuck with a theme that caused multiple unresolved conflicts. It's not our theme it's the plugins. It's not our plugin it's the theme. Low and behold it was always the theme and yes... more than two years later it's still the theme after switching from Vermilion to TwentyXX for tests. The back and forth support tracks burned through my membership and now you people want to take more money from people with empty promises for future upgrades if they spend the money to own it.

I return from time to time to see what's new and maybe reconsider Rocket Themes. All I ever see is more and more themes with a primary focus on developing for the latest version of Gantry. Why would anyone buy a theme that never sees updates or advancements and is limited to old Gantry 4? A fire sale promotes a promise of receiving updates. Really?!

The simple answer about Vermilion not having been updated is because we have had nothing to update for the WordPress version. It is bug free so requires no update. :)

You keep saying bugs when you are actually referring to 3rd party plugins that don't work as you want them to. In fact I answered your original post on this subject 15 months ago. You can read it again here - www.rockettheme.com/forum/configuration-...ship?start=0#1197031

We have a variety of subscriptions to suit most needs. Unfortunately we have many members who want our products as cheaply as they can get them and then want free support forever more. That is not how a subscription scheme works. Yes, you can quote Microsoft and their updates, Apple too, but please remember that their products are many more times expensive in the first place than our subscription plans.

I find it amazing that people will buy a 3 month subscription yet still expect support once their membership expires. Even though your last membership subscription expired in September 2014 you have posted since then requesting help with issues you had with your template. You received help even though you were not entitled to it. This means that the time spent on your requests as a non-paying member is preventing us from helping those members who do have paid up subscriptions.

Why would you update something that isn't broken? Gantry 5 allows most designers and developers more flexibility than ever before. This is our framework and we will obviously design templates to utilise it.

What we will not do though is promise that our templates will work with every plugin that members decide to install. The reason being that some of those plugins have been poorly designed by coders who don't take into account anything other than the default template of the CMS they are designing for.

Let me ask you a question Kitty - Suppose you built me a website 2 years ago and now something is not working after I have added lots of extra plugins. Will you now fix it, 2 years later, free of charge?

I suspect the answer would be no, yet that is exactly what you are expecting from us.

It really is simple. If you want ongoing support for a template then buy a lifetime subscription for the template. That way you get any upgrades, if there any, and ongoing support when you have a problem. You can buy the template for $34 at the moment during the sale, but even at full price of $49 that is a small amount to pay for a template and support.

At present you do not have a subscription, your last expired almost 2 years ago, so please do not expect FREE support on future posts as it is not fair on other members.

      Thanks for your co-operation.

    • Hey David,

Thanks for the detailed and well prepared reply. To clarify, I had nothing to do with Myriad theme. I merely piggybacked on a post by another that related to my issue with Vermillion. By no means am I requesting free lifetime support. Only after joining did I thoroughly understand and accept the business model. My personal experience is that something has been off with the theme's compatibility for a very long time. And, over time, isolating the issues have eluded me amid other more pressing tasks.

As it relates to 3rd party plugins not working as I expect, you're correct, but only with the theme. It remains true that certain functionality and core dependency are negatively impacted by the theme. It could be any number of things, but I believe it's rooted in Gantry 4. I was just graced by a generous plugin developer of a key plugin from Envato. He looked closer to pinpoint the conflict I've experienced with similar such premium plugins I have purchased and ultimately abandoned due to the glitchiness.

      This is his finding:
Your Theme changed and altered the WP system core workflow, especially along the admin-ajax script, which is a standard ajax workflow for WP. That is totally forbidden and against any good development wp rules.

So, get in touch with your theme developing theme ask to change this totally wrong workflow.

This kind of theme will never have the chance to be available into a premium market, such as Envato.

From the user's perspective, (Mine) only the theme developer knows exactly what the script's workflow functionality is and the only way to get at the root of a problem is to just keep asking for help until a satisfactory solution is delivered. So it remains a mystery. Where, what, when, how and why?

The easier solution here would now be to simply ditch my beloved Vermilion, go into deep maintenance mode and start all over again with a non-Gantry Framework theme and rebuild my web presence, including sliders, accordians, tabs, widgets, associated content and overall structure. We could dust our hands and call it a repeat project. Too bad because I really was committed to Vermillion. As indicated, I would have purchased the theme outright if I were confident my concerns would be addressed and resolved without the back and forth of public shaming, finger pointing and blame gaming the plugins.

As an aside: I checked out Envato's market to investigate the Wordpress Gantry presence and find that only two theme developers have such for sale, but appear abandoned for support or updates for a couple years. Roughly 90% of Gantry themes there are all Joomla with Gantry 5, so that speaks volumes.

My understanding is that Vermillion only works with Gantry 4 given that WP core update doesn't alert to updates from Gantry 4 to 5. Am I wrong? And, if so, could I simply install Gantry 5 to potentially resolve the admin-ajax script workflow problem? If this might resolve the on-going gliches, then I will respectively buy the theme outright.

One last thing: Rocket Themes does have beautiful themes and excellent documentation for building out the themes.

Thanks again for your prior reply.

    • Hi Kitty,

I did some following up on the comments about workflow. It turns out that Gantry 4 did indeed make some changes but the developer who did that work is no longer with RocketTheme. As you can imagine our efforts are clearly focused on Gantry 5 now, which does work across platforms as expected.

The way forward would be to go Gantry 5 but you would have to ditch Vermilion as that is Gantry 4 only.

Having said that, you could probably get close to Vermilion by editing a G5 template, probably Xenon or Salient.

      Hope this helps 8)

    • Thank you. I appreciate your resppnse. I knew all along that there was something wrong with the theme and Gantry 4 that was causing conflicts, but no one seemed to be able to deliver a solution other than spending more money. It would have been better to simply update the theme to be compatible with Gantry 5. Otherwise, why would I purchase a lifetime support of the theme as is when there is no planned updates?

Again, thank you for going the extra mile on this lingering issue. One suggestion, new members or single theme purchasers of Gantry 4 products should know that certain plugins adhering to the Wordress core workflow might run into problems. They should be strongly encouraged to only purchase Gantry 5 templates to avoid this. Better yet, straight-out indicate in bold italics "Gantry 4 Only*"

*May cause conflicts with Wordpress core ajax workflow in some plugins.

Or, simplify this by making a Vermillion 2.0 and begin updating pre-existing Gantry 4 themes for use in Gantry 5 or higher.
