    • Hi,
      I need to learn a bit of basics here. How do you override the template with new functionality? I see from some of the info you gave me earlier and indeed in the rocket demos the content has been customised. I am completely at a loss in this area. Can you recommend some how tos for this please? I need to enrich some of the modules for a better look. E.g. I'm trying to use the yvcomment to set up my newsbox and I only want the article comments appearing in the newsbox. Their site suggests - see below = but I don't know what I need to do to create this. Thanks, Karen

      'Defined by Article template' is for people, creating their own templates for the Joomla! site, for those, who want to have full control of the places, where the HTML text of the yvComment plugin ("Output of yvComment") would be inserted.
      When this value is selected, yvComment plugin doesn't add "Output of yvComment" to the predefined place of the page (e.g. it doesn't uppend its output to the text of the article). Instead, it creates new attribute of the article: 'comments', - and writes "Output of yvComment" there. (The 'comments' attribute is not stored in the database)
      To place this "Output of yvComment" onto the page something like this should be added to the article's template (the example below is for 'frontpage' and 'blog' views):

      <?php if (isset($this->item->comments)) : ?>
      <?php echo $this->item->comments; ?>
      <?php endif; ?>

    • Unfortunately, I am not familiar with ycomments. I am taking that you are looking at using what is commonly referred to as a "Latest Comment" module for display on the front page for what your calling a "newsbox". I am not a coder...but I can suggest you talk to the developer of ycomments and see if they have a "Latest Comment" module or see if they will develop one - since they know their product better than most. Also, as per their instructions, maybe you can ask for some assistance (just ask reaallll nice :P )

      As for the customized RT demos...each one comes with details of how to recreate the demo content (go back to the demos and check them out). Also, suggestion - is what I do is create a separate install of the template using the RTLauncher and then go in and see how they did it and recreate it on my site. I've learned a lot that way.

      As for tilting the slide show at a 45 degree angle - maybe you can post in the RTSlideShow forum in RocketWerx for help with that or again create an overlay that features your images at a 45 degree angle, which might make the overall images bigger, but can be a simple way to achieve the look you are going for. If you would like me to create a sample of what I am talking about - just post a picture of two items (or send them to me email) you would like to feature in the slideshow then I will whip up a overlay example for a 45 degree angle. Note: You might honestly find loading the slideshow using mosload as your best option.

      As for posting questions to me...if this works using this thread - go for it ;D

      I don't have all the answers, and when I do have an answer I'll freely give it up, but hopefully when I don't have the direct answer I can at least guide you in the right direction.

    • So, I found Jcomments - it has the features you are looking for Download

      You use Gravatar.com for the Avatars. The Avatars can be set to show in the "latest comment" module. A simple way to get the "scrolly effect" is to use mosloadposition plugin and load the "latest comment" module into a "wrapper" module set at w 200px x h 350px (you have to play with it a little and adjust the width and height, plus adjust wrapper config) and set the number of comments to show larger than the height of the wrapper.

      I think JomCommments has what you need too, but that is commercial. Hope that helps.

      Edit

      Just remembered if you put it in a wrapper - you have to account for it opening in the wrapper and not the top page. ::) :P So, better to load it into a "custom" module instead of a wrapper and use the - shoot I forgot what it is called, but I use JoomlaFck editor plugin and they have a button where you can add a scrolly box. Maybe tiny has a way too. Boy, I need to learn my editors better. :P

    • Thanks again!!!!!

      I have so much of the basics still to learn. I only learnt today what a custom module was and I was so excited when I found it. My Joomla book arrived today so I'll be swotting away. Don't know anything about wrappers yet but I'm sure there is a lot of help out there - if not in my new book!

      Thanks for doing the research - this is fantastic support!

    • Hey Wingman,

      Do you know of any tutorials out there on custom modules and what you can do with them? It sounds like the definite direction I need to go to jazz up my site. I've done a couple of searches but nothing that introduces it from the start just what other people are having problems with. Its the html function you use isn't it? I don't know how to load the comments box into a custom module like you said..
      Cheers,Karen

      Lesson #4 - Custom modules are well - like writing an article. You get all the great functions you get with writing an article (editor, html, plugins and more) all in a nice little compact module. So, anything you can do writing content, and there is a lot, you can do with "custom" modules which you can then place all over the site. Hint: make them small enough to fit where you are placing them. Pretty simple...and the better you are at HTML Java, editor, etc... - the better presentations you can make.

      You can try using "tables" and set you column to 1 and your rows to 1 then adjust your width to 200px and your height to 350px and use the load module plugin to load your other module (make up a unique module position for the module you are loading into the other module - basically, a position that is not in your template. Cause if it is in your template it will show up there too giving you two of the same module on the same page.). Then publish your "custom" module where you want it, then publish your other module into the unique module position.

      Cool - nice pictorial.

      Wrappers allow you to load external websites or pages to your website. You can also get creative.

      I am creating a Jukebox, using wrappers, for local artist to feature their music on my community site - they get there own mp3 player, profile, buy now button etc...

      How it works is - the jukebox has its own sub-domain jukebox.mysite.com (site #1) - this website has master controls on the top and wraps the musicians site musicians.mysite.com (site #2 - this is their control panel basically community builder profiles) I set up and the community site www.mysite.com (site #3) I set up.

      What happens customers can go to jukebox.mysite.com and use the controls to pick an artist, then turn on the music and listen. Then they can scroll down and browse the community site while listening to the music. They can change artist anytime without losing their page on the community site and vise versa. I am also setting it up so the can pick to have the jukebox on the top or bottom of the page. When I finalize it I'll share.

      Wrappers are cool and can be lot's of fun and are an easy way to enhance your website. But they have limitations and before you feature someone else's website in yours via a wrapper - make sure you get permission.
