    EDIT: Macphoria - Once Again!

Posted 18 years 3 months ago
    • Ok, I posted my sites in the old forum, but I will post one of them again - I have made some changes to it over the last few days because I had some free time. Check it out and let me know what you think.

EDIT: Ok, the new Jan template was just what I wanted...so I couldn't pass it up...No more macphoria, but still love the template.

    • Hooray for free time... specifically, winter break! :)

1). Congrats, Stewart, on your Teacher of the Year award. Your Web sites illuminate how teaching (and with technology) is labor of love for you.

2). I've been working on a M*ambo and now, Joomla-based site for about a year to replace an old static site. Your site (with the colophon component) has been most helpful in taming the different plug-in technologies available to do what I want to do.

The old site was designed by a student, and after he graduated in 1999, it was taken over by two separate teachers (one of whom has retired). The most recent teacher has taken to scanning flyers in, because she's not resourceful (nor friendly) enough to get the original digital file to copy/paste from, and she's just plain lazy! So, a few teachers saw some of my other sites (such as WHSFA , WDCA , etc.) and wanted me to take over. So, come January, our IT person is changing the FTP password, and placing a re-direct to the new site.

The template for the new site is based on an old Cyberdine template. I really like the tabs and submenus (similar to the new GeoSync template here), but it's a "lighter," "airy" design. I would like to add a shadow on the sides, similar to most of JamboWorks' other designs, but I haven't quite figured out how to do that yet. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be much obliged.

    • Thanks - it certinaly is something I really enjoy doing. Your story sounds very similar to mine. Best of luck to you.

Alos, the rkhs.org site looks very good. I really like the template and love the tabs. You have it set up relly nice, you understand very well how Joomla! works and use it very well.

I am waiting for a similar template from Andy to swith ours over to. I do like macphoria, but would like a little more of a portal site, like yours, but I haven't found any that I really like for this project - maybe next months. Anyway, as far a the shadow, the only way I can modify it is with the source file and if you don't have it for that template, I am not sure how you could do it.

Also, what module do you use for "latest events" - I have that mod but cannot figure out how to take out the times for the event. I just want the date and event (not time) like you have.

    • Almost all of my computer and Web development skills are self-taught, though I highly recommend the book, "Dont Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability," which is more about the methodology of laying out Web site than the technology itself.

I've driven pages with portal plugins for vBulletin and InvisionBoard forum software (talk about a lot of hacking and monkeying around with PHP), and dabbled with phpWebSite for awhile before finding M*ambo, which I started using in May of 2004 (I did an archive.org "Wayback" search, 'cause I actually forgot). This is now the third generation (4.5.0.x, 4.5.1/4.5.2, Joomla! 1.0.x) and probably about three dozen components, modules and bots I've worked with and tweaked... and it just keeps getting better. I now process debate tournament registration using Phil Taylor's Phil-A-Form component, and couldn't imagine going back to the system I had to create by hand in Dreamweaver. When I found Jamboworks in August, it took my sites to the next level with such a fine aesthetic touch. Andy truly understands the essense of Web usability through the intuitive nature of his templates.

In terms of applying the shadow to the template, I'll have to re-write the table code from the ground-up, using one of Andy's templates as a template (that sounded redundant). The one thing this template does better than Andy's (in terms of the tabs), is that the "Home" tab can be selected by default upon entry to the site (using the root domain URL as opposed to the "frontpage" URL parsed by the menu). I agree, though -- I'd love a template that has tabs (in fact, I suggested before on the old forum a template that has tabs that are also drop-down menus -- the best of both worlds of interface). Life would be perfect if Andy was able to release that, PLUS a tab system that selects "home" by default.

For latest events, you change the "Custom Format String:" in the Events Config component control panel. Mine is set to:
      ${startDate(M j)}-${endDate(M j)}: ${title}
However, I just this morning (after more than a year trying to figure this out) stumbled on the solution to a bug with that module that was displaying repeating events more than once, despite my toggling that setting to "YES" (meaning to display only once) in the control panel -- I had to hand-change the "0" to a "1" in line 211 of mod_events_latest.php (in the Modules directory). Interestingly, in older versions of the Events component, you used to have to hand-code the module settings in that file, before the module settings were migrated to the administrator component. Guess they overlooked that setting.

Anyhow, I had one other question for you, Stewart: how do you isolate the faculty/staff from the alumni in comprofiler? I notice that in the alumni section, you can click on people's names in the list, and you will see the "Alumni Profile" tab, and in the faculty section, you click and see the "Faculty profile." When users of the site edit their information, do they see those other tabs, or do you have some type of advanced permissions scenario? I really haven't had time to monkey with that yet, and comprofiler is so extensive, I have found that project to be a little daunting!

    • I'm going to have to get that book! My bigest hurdle when designing a website is trying to think like a first time visitor to the website. I try to equate it to my first time driving in Houston ;D

Anyhow, I have to agree with Stewart's observations. Your site design is awesome. I too like the tab/sub-menu navigation. Really nice!

I do have individual tabs for alumni profile and faculty profile. When registering you only see the alumni tab (items that I have set to appear at registration. However, when they (alumni) edits their profile they do see the faculty profile, but you can make a note that this tab is only for faculty. I used this as a faculty directory because I wanted the faculty to be able to edit a profile without me having to enter the info. As far as displaying the different list, comprofile dose that very well. You just have to play with it to get it to display what you want. I do this mostly by assigning our teachers to a higher user group and have comprofiler display just the publishers (for example).

You should really try comprofiler, also you can now link it to YANC registration as well.
Thanks for the help on the module and that bug (been trying to figure that one out too).
