joomla 2.5 stable has been released yesterday.
1. update or not?
please find some more info about our views on j2.5 here in our official blog post:

the step from joomla 1.7 to 2.5 has been labelled a minor update, but still a lot of things have been changed. at this point we strongly recommend to try this on a test site first to ensure that everything is working as expected before updating any live sites. as usual make sure to take a backup.
if you want to rush to joomla 2.5 because it contains some security fixes, please remember that you could just go from 1.7.3 to 1.7.4 first.

2. technical requirements
joomla 2.5 should be used with php 5.3.x

(we have tested it with php 5.2.17 as well though and so far so good)
3. gantry
gantry should be used with php 5.2.17 or 5.3.x
we have released a gantry update to address some backend issues, if you are using a gantry template, please make sure to use gantry 3.2.15+

4. our extensions
there have also been several updates to our extensions to address some issues:

5. our templates
we believe that all our gantry templates for j1.7 are compatible with j2.5 as well, so far we have not found any further issues besides those that were addressed in the latest gantry update.
all non-gantry templates are being tested as well and so far we have not discovered any issues. testing is still going on and so we can not guarantee full compatibility at this point.
there still is a bug present in j2.5 with the joomla template installer code, you might receive an error upon template installation, you can refer to brian's post here:

UPDATE: currently we are aware of the following issues and the developers are going to address those asap:
1. fusionmenu js breaking by the 'load more articles' feature.
this seems to affect all our gantry templates at the moment.
as a result the fusionmenu dropdown is not animated, some other js based extensions might lose their functionality and in some templates such as omnicron, the fusionmenu dropdown will be covered by content positioned below the dropdown.
as a temporary workaround, please disable the 'load more articles' feature in your template settings.
this issue will most likely be addressed in a gantry update.
2. article info not loading in some templates.
this issue affects the templates omnicron, panacea, syndicate and zephyr.
those templates have a setting in the 'features' tab called 'article info style'.
in case you are using 'article info style' = layout3, the popup which is supposed to display the article options on frontend will not show up.
as a temporary workaround, please use 'article info style' = layout1 or layout2.
this issue will most likely be addressed in template-related updates.
3. new article parameters option introduced in j2.5 not yet integrated into our templates.
if you edit an article in the backend you will see a new tab 'images and links'.

4. the pagination display vertical in the new j2.5 smart search results page.
this issue affects the following templates:
zephyr, paradox, quantive, somaxiom, syndicate, tachyon, camber, dominion, enigma, entropy, halcyon, hybrid, juxta, kinetic, maelstrom, mercado, modulus, nebulae, omnicron and panacea.
this issue will most likely be addressed in template-related updates.
5. the search results in the new j2.5 smart search results page display stacked, there is no separation between them.
this issue affects the following templates:
affinity, akiraka, mixxmag, quasar and refraction.
