this one is more important as the base of users still runnig ie6 is still huge.

...base of users still using IE6 BECAUSE people cater to them; imagine how fast and how many would migrate if they couldn't use the WWW anymore. :)

    • hi

no offense, my guess would be that J1.0 is dead when ....

.... the J developers say that its dead and stop providing downloads for it
.... all major 3pd extensions have gone 1.5 native stable
.... an efficient/easy/flawless way of migration for existing sites was provided.

until them its a matter of choice, which IMHO you should continue to provide.

      whatever... :)

    • I would love it if IE6 disappeared today, but that simply isn't the reality - even for corporate users in mid-sized (and probably large too) companies, much less the home users.

These sort of issues are often dictated by policy rather than user preference. There are also a lot of non-xp or vista users out there to support as well.

Unfortunately IE7 isn't perfect either, but in less than a year we'll have to deal with IE8, IE7, and IE6 - not to mention Chrome, Firefox 2, FireFox 3, Safari, Opera etc.

      What fun :)

As far as the J Developers stopping to provide support for it, I think they said that they are ending in Feb 2009 (or sometime in the spring 2009). I don't anticipate that they will ever stop hosting the downloads for it though.

I would ABSOLUTELY applaud an easy way of migrating sites to 1.5, I tried the site conversion utility, but that didn't seem to do much more than just translate the articles to the new database format - which for small sites you might as well just copy and paste.

    • I totally agreed with Frank Schräpler, you don't simply have the right to pull the plug for 1.0 in january 09, ask the developers, run several surveys...also we cannot hide from IE6 reality..come on guys..when most popular joomla apps become 100% stable and J developers make the move, then we should speak about migration. Also Conversion from J1 to J1.5 is far from being trustful.

    • I don't believe Surveys or Opinions about whether to pull the plug or not are appropriate. This is not a democracy and the developers need to be driven to a certain extent.

V1 must be dropped at some point, the key decisions to be made are when and how.

Timescales need to be agreed by those who understand the commercial impacts and communicated clearly to us and the plugin/app developers, offering a REASONABLE timescale for app rework for 1.5.

An upgrade support method to get existing V1 users to V1.5 also needs to be established, again a commercial decision. I would be in favour of knowledgebase and member forum support. The last thing we need is Rockettheme developers physically supporting migration when they could be developing advanced app bridges/templates etc etc.

Unfortunately, our club templates are just like any other developing software product....sooner or later outdated OSs get dropped. Being smart about 'when' and 'how' is what makes the difference.

This statement could just as well have been applied to IE6...

I'm not deciding tho but it would be nice to kill J! 1.0 and IE6 at the same time :D
