RokSprocket 2.1.0: not a good move

  • RokSprocket 2.1.0: not a good move

Posted 11 years 1 month ago
    • I've been a user of RokSprocket from the start and have become a big fan of the improvements in capability and usability with each new version...until this one.

One of the main reasons I've been enjoying this component is the flexibilty of its use - it's so handy to be able to grab some categories from joomla/k2 and have it display a bunch of content in new configurations. "Lets see if strips would work better...maybe a mosaic layout..." - now I need to choose this immediately and if I'm not satisfied, need to create a new module and sometimes re-enter all the same category selections/filtering settings, or with the simple content, need to re-create it all. Also gone is the ability to quick drop in some content to mock things up with the Simple content and later choose the neceessary articles/categories instead.

I can't complain about having that new option selection page, but I really don't like being locked into those settings for content Provider and layout from then on out. I hope this flexibility can be reinstated.

    • I agree that the change is not good.

I updated roksprocket to a site a was working on and lost the ability to change between providers...Joomla Content or Simple Content.

I actually thought it was a bug, but figured it out after creating a new module/roksprocket, which now locks you into a Content provider from the start.

I'd be interested to know why this change ? It is definatley less flexible, for me me anyway.

    • hi there,

the reason for this change is that we needed to optimize the roksprocket admin to be faster and this meant removing all the dynamic fields and loading of extra stuff.

we also had complaints from members before that custom settings on items would get lost when changing the layout type.

i think this new version of roksprocket is an improvement, just needs some getting used to.

I respectfully disagree. The new version is cripled now. I can't see how I'm going to use it in the future. The ability to draft out design scenarios is now gone. Very dissapointing. :(

    • I think the problem is having to reenter everything when deciding to switch layouts.

With other modules, It'd kind of easy to move/duplicate stuff, because you can do Save As A Copy and update the settings. Saving a copy is almost pointless because you are locked in to content provide AND layout.

Now I can see maybe locking in to just the content type since you most likely do not have multiple data sources for articles.

Also note: the screenshots on the main page for downloading the most current version are now wrong since you can't change source and type in the module: www.rockettheme.com/joomla/extensions/roksprocket

I wish there was a way to download pre 2.1 versions.

    • I agree. I really need to be able to switch between layout options. Especially for the "Simple" content input, as I have no articles to pull content from. I have to copy and paste from each content item into a new module and this could take awhile with a lot of items in the module.
    • When solved, please modify your original post and add (SOLVED) into the subject AND change your icon to the green check.  This helps people know they can find a solution in your post if they have the same problem.

    • I'm bumping this thread. I'm worried about the slience from the RT team on this issue.

      Are we being ignored?

I would really like a statement from the team so that I know if I should invest more time using RokSprocket.

      Thank you!

    • In total agreement this is a total downgrade of this extension. I no way is it an improvement. They fixed the problem by just taking away the functionality now there's no problem. The fact is we liked the functionality. Please put it back

    • Oh how I hate the sound of silence.

RocketTheme, do you have any time frame on when you'll fix RokSprocket to be useful again?

I just got the feeling that RokSprocket got killed. No new version since 2.1.1? :(
