    • Hello RocketTheme,

Hopefully not seen as being too silly a question, but before doing any updates . . .

Are all your extensions that are compatible with Joomla 3.2 also compatible with Joomla 3.3 recently released ?

      Regards,

      Pipkin.

    • Anytime Joomla releases a new version the unfortunate reaction here is a wince and kneejerk :S

Generally our extensions are up to snuff for J3.3, if there are issues then we'll bug them out in short time.

In a case of J3.3 and you, to prevent the aforementioned anatomical reactions, PLEASE - backup your site with a free copy of Akeeba backup

    • Hi there,

Please remember - Joomla 3.X is Short Term Support and is meant to help developers test their extensions in readiness for Joomla 3.5 and as such every release will create problems as the Joomla team introduce new code and changes. I will not put any of my clients to J3 until 3.5 has been out a few months and the bugs are ironed out.

Check Joomla site here - www.joomla.org/download.html - where it says "For those already on Joomla 2.5, we recommend waiting until Joomla 3.5 before upgrading unless you need the features of 3.2."

      Hope this helps 8)

    • Hello,

      Many thanks for your replies.

Backing up is always done - the Pro version of what Dan G suggested is very good :-)

Dan G - Perhaps a wince and a question (even if silly ?) is a good thing - thinking ahead ?

David - thanks for your reply. I have two live Joomla 2.5 Sites - and have development folder for each to test the upgrade from Joomla 2.5 to (at the time) Joomla 3.2 - initially using Akeeba Backup Pro to restore the live sites to their respective dev folder.

As an aside - while I take on board what you (David) say about Joomla Long Term Support - in my mind there is perhaps a "grey" area - I have read articles (including from Joomla themselves) that the Roadmap for Joomla is taking a turn so that there is not such a long wait between releases.

My experience with using Joomla 3.x (albeit in a dev environment) is promising - I like it.

      Thanks again for your replies.

      Regards.

    • Hi there,

The road map for Joomla is indeed changing - developer.joomla.org/news/586-joomla-development-strategy.html and more here developer.joomla.org/news/587-faq-s-for-...d-release-cycle.html

Because our forums are read by many people I always try and ensure that replies will help the majority. Your response shows that you are taking due diligence as would any respectable developer. Unfortunately we do have many posts where members have 'broken' sites from the upgrade they did by clicking a button. No backup, no testing on clone/dev site, in fact no clue about good process management with a live site.

By highlighting the potential issues that can befall early adopters I hope to encourage those who can wait, to do so.

I have used J3.X on local and dev servers and quite like it but it doesn't mean I am going to waste time fixing client sites on every new release. Invariably it is the poorer designed extensions that break and the developer is nowhere to be found.

Hope this explains the reason for my original reply ;)

    • Hi Pipkin
David my esteemed colleague has touched on a point that I wish to expound on. As mods we are always trying new J things on our locals and test beds. Some members will bravely venture out against recommendations and then find themselves up the crik without a paddle (or backup).

So then they come to us. As we try to sort out there issues and post solutions this forum actually becomes a diary of sorts of the "learning curve" that members, mods and devs are going through.

As time passes for those who opted much later for the new J thingie, they have an advantage in getting issues sorted out.

So where I may be a daring "early adopter" in my hobbies, as for my living in dealing with client sites I live by this rule:

If it ain't broke...don't fix it!

P.S. This contradicts the policy of my government "If a parliamentary panel has ascertained that it is not broke...devote countless spending programs to fix it till it is" :p
