Menus in Gantry are confusing and frustrating

    • We are developing a couple of multi-lingual website, one using the Xenon template, the other Requiem both using the Gantry 5 framework. For most things Gantry 5 is really amazing. You can easily produce so fantastic effects.

For multi-lingual website we use falang. We have even found a way to translate the particles, not through falang, but creating duplicate modules asigned to each language with the particle inside, and it works great. All other content we use falang.

However when it comes to menus this where we have run in to trouble. Firstly, before we even look a translation, we found it confusing to set up the menu. We create the menu items, but if we change the order in the joomla part, it does nothing when view on the site. Confusing??. We then realised that you must go into the template and click on menu and change the order there. Not exactly intuitive. And when the website is up and running we don't really want to give clients access to template, just to change the order of the menu. Plus clients in general have a hard enough time just setting up simply the content and menus in joomla.

Secondly we translated the menu items through falang component. However the order does not come out as specified either in the template or joomla menu item list. So for example we have English on the right order, as setup in the template menu section (whose order is different to the joomla item list ;-( ) but in Spanish the order is completely different. Any ideas how we can get the menu order to come out correctly for different lauguages?

    • We are aware of the Falang issue - please see https://github.com/gantry/gantry5/issues/595 . Please feel free to add further comments in that ticket or raise a ticket of your own about your experience.

I appreciate that you are using a third-party product for translation buthis is our recommended approach to multil-lingual sites in Gantry 5... http://docs.gantry.org/gantry5/tutorials/multilingual-site .

Note also there are other issues in repect of menu item ordering in Gantry 5 https://github.com/gantry/gantry5/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+menu+order . I can't offer a solution to those issues as they need to be investigated by our developers but the more people who express an opinion on those tickets the more likely it is that a higher priority will be getting those matters resolved.

Sorry I can't be more help.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Hi Mark, thank you for your reply. For modules we use the Joomla method of creating duplicate modules for the different languages. However for menus, we use falang because we just find it so much easier to manager. Perhaps it is just habit!

I have added comments to both threads on GitHub. We will have a root around in the code from our side to see what can be done to resolve these two issues.

    • Yes I have seen you comments on github already. I don't think this will be an easy fix (if it was it would already have been done). Don't forget also that Gantry 5 is trying to keep as much functionality platform agnostic too because it works on Joomla, Wordpress, and soon GRAV too. The Gantry 5 Menu editor augments that offered by the CMS itself and you can do more with it than the standard CMS menu manager (e.g. particles and modules in menu, dropdown directions, icons, dropdown width, etc, etc).

Thank you for taking the time to add those comments though - we do appreciate that. Hope fully it will stimulate some debate.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Hi Mark,

I am speaking with mahagr on GitHub. However when we went back to save the alias as they were originally, which returns the menu order back to normal, we then lost the child menu links. Is it possible that they are connected to the alias of the parent?

    • James - I'm sorry but I can't really answer your question so I have asked mahgr to answer your question in the guthub ticket where you asked the same https://github.com/gantry/gantry5/issues/552 .

      Regards, Mark.
