Editing Logos - WHAT?!

  • Editing Logos - WHAT?!

    Posted 14 years 11 months ago
    • I am really new to Joomla. And figured Rockettheme would make it easier.

      I just loaded my first Robkettheme template called Juxta.

      Now my website says Juxta on it. Okay. I figured I will edit the logo.

      But looking at the tutorial, it says I have to use Adobe Fireworks to do that. (and there is a little click here button to go to Adobe to get it) It costs $500!!!

      Am I overlooking something? Must this logo and all graphics be done in Fireworks? And if so, I think I should have been told that Firefox skill and ownership is required to make the templates functional.

      Even as I type this, I think I MUST be overlooking something. Please set me straight.

      Gary

    • Hi Pierre. Thanks for reply.

      I know how to hire people to do things. That's easy. But I am trying to empower myself with tools like RocketTheme and Joomla.

      I am betting it would take me 30 days to learn Fireworks, when I already know other grpahics programs.

    • If you decide to DL the trial and need help with Fireworks post here:

      www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=23&rb_v=viewforum

      There are also some tutorials on editing the logo there.

      Also note you don't need Fireworks to create a logo, only edit the original source file.

      (Many members are confused by this, to be honest, even though I have Fireworks I've never used the source file, I simply made my own.)

      So you can create your logo in any image editing program you have and save it as a png.

      If you want to use the font that is in the demo, it's in the source file package.
    • Thanks,

    • You do NOT need fireworks to edit all the graphics for a template. What you DO need is a working understanding of where all the graphics files for each template AND each style for that template are located. This will vary somewhat with each template. From there, you can edit the files to your heart's content with ANY graphics editor that supports .png file format.

      With the exception of a few demo files, RT has placed all these files in:
      /joomla install files/template files/name of template/images....
      From there, it depends on the template, but the file structure itself will lead you where you want to go.

      As to changing your logo: You can put anything you want as a logo, you are not locked in with the one supplied in either style or font. If the logo will be a different "size" than the one supplied, you will need to edit the template.css file for that template.
        Find the file: --->/joomla install files/template files/name of template/css/template.css

        Look for the statement: #rt-logo {width: 475px;height: 240px;display: block;}

        Change the height and width to match your logo dimensions.
      That's all there is to it!

      Frankly, if you can't have/want/afford Fireworks AND dependent upon your expertise, fireworks can overwhelm you at first and would not be very helpful. You were right about how long it takes you to learn, but that is also contingent upon just how much you understand from "other" graphics programs. Many of them are becoming more standardized so you can switch back and forth. That said, IF you plan on doing multiple sites, it is well worth the investment as it takes only a minute or two to modify the look of an entire site in fireworks, as compared with manually adjusting each individual image file.

      The fireworks files are included for our convenience. Since one alteration of those files can cause unwanted results with an inexperienced user, I consider than an "extreme" courtesy on RT's part. Once we get them, they aren't obligated to tell us how to fix it when we break it, but they DO. Another extreme courtesy on RT's part.

      CAVEAT: You should be familiar with working with pixels to alter many of the files as they may contain more than one graphic. If your pixels are off and you don't know how to re-code the proper css file, your displays may become skewed.
      ***********************************************************************************
      To change the name of the site displayed on the tab:
        Select ---> Menus
        Select--->Main Menu
        Select ---> HOME

      On the right hand sand, under parameters:
        Select ---> Parameters(System)

      Go to: Page Title
      Give your page a name. That is what will show up on your frontpage TAB.

      You can do this for EACH menu item on EACH menu. Whether you elect to show the title is up to you. Try it each way and see how you like it.
      ***********************************************************************************
      The tutorials for most of the above cover the information you are seeking. In addition, it would benefit you to use the Joomla EXTERNAL help menu located at:
        Sign in to Administrator Control Panel
        On the top menu: Select ---> Site--->Global Configuration ---> System--->Help Server
        In the drop down menu for that item, select the Joomla help site for your language.
        You can change it later if you desire once your site is "live."
      ***********************************************************************************
      Since you are new to both Joomla AND RT templates, I would suggest using RT Launcher to install your site and using the demo content. Instructions for each item are located within the template itself.

      Hope that helps,
      Carol (a.k.a. Empowermom)

    • Thanks for all the information - that is information; quite frankly, that RocketTheme - which bills itself as a user friendly template builder should provide. I, too, was astounded to see RT say simply get Adobe Fireworks to add your logo to the site! I am almost quit right there.

      Since the logo is obviously a critical part of any webpage RT would do themselves and their clients a favor if they provided more instructions on how to input logos - certainly more than, go buy a Fireworks package (so simple! so cheap!) and then have at it. I was completely astonished at that.

    • Actually, RocketTheme DOES provide information on how to change your logo file with every template. It is included in the tutorials, within the demo content and in each template forum.

      It isn't unreasonable to assume you know how to create and/or modify graphics files if you are attempting to build a website. You must also know HOW to reference that file when you build your page. If you don't have the basic skills on graphics creation and manipulation, along with how a web page is constructed, you will have a great deal of difficulty building a site with ANY template.

      RT provides a logo image which you can replace at will. The fact it's created in Fireworks doesn't mean that's the ONLY way to change the file, it's just an option for Fireworks users. Anyone familiar with graphics software would know this.

      Regardless of what software you use, there are four simple things you need to know when altering your logo file:
        The name of the file
        The size of the file
        Where the file is located
        Where the file is referenced in the CSS

      If you know the above, it doesn't matter what software program "creates" it. You have the option to use the file provided, alter it or create your own.

      You can alter the template.css file to accommodate any size logo. If you are using a Gantry template, you don't even have to go that far. Just use the "auto size" feature.

      Last but not least, while we may be "clients" to RT, we are members in a template club, not clients in the sense that they are obligated to build our site for us. We must have a working knowledge of web design concepts and construction, as well as Joomla in order to utilize the templates. Without this fundamental understanding, your template won't matter.
