Looking to order contacts by category

So I have been reading on the Joomla forums that you can't have a complete list of contacts that are put into categories displayed in the category list order. (The order you have them in the Contact Manager - Categories Manager - backend)
This is frustrating. We have a hierarchy (as do most businesses) and I need them to show up in that order. Is there a way, by modifying the template->html->com_contact->?->default.php to override the normal display and achieve my goal?
