I am working on my church's new website -

Hmmm...
Less than 4 seconds for a full load here in Japan, menus are just about as fast.
You could try Y-Slow, a FireBug plug in, to see what it suggests for improving speed.
Probably the biggest thing is to make sure your images are optimized. - Thanks,
