RocketTheme folks:
Hi. as a newby to Drupal and RocketThemes, who is also a programmer, I would like to offer a suggestion to help newbies lower their frustration level. First off, I'd like to say that the themes are beautiful and I also appreciate a LOT, the open source model that makes the cost so low.
The first problem with being a newby is that there are many places to find information. As an open source project, different folks are contributing, and the information tree gets complex. So, it can be hard to find just what is needed to solve a specific problem. I accept that, but that's the environment a newby sees. I do make some suggestions in the next paragraph.
Now for a specific. The rocketThemes come with comments disabled in the php node.tpl.php code. There was probably some reason for this, but to the newby it can be VERY frustrating to see all of the comment settings and permissions in the administration pages, yet comments never appear. Who would have thought that enabling them (such a basic feature) meant an edit to the php file? After a day of hair-pulling, I finally re-found the FAQ page and voila! There it was! The same issue occurs with the display of the front page content in the SolarSentinel theme. An edit to the php is required.
This situation would be much improved if these issues were covered in the tutorials with the Demo. It would make it a LOT less frustrating. Since I'm addressing the Demo tutorials, why not include a link to the template file for the logo. Changing the logo is trivial, by editing the css theme. You suggest editing a file that is not available anywhere I can find, which is also frustrating. Changing the Logo is one of the most basic things a new user will do. Why not put a link to the template file in the Demo tutorial, and also indicate where to change the logo AND its size? If these issues occur across all themes, perhaps a link to the common issues could take the newby to the FAQ page.
I hope my suggestions are helpful. And, thanks for the great resource!
