Shud I wait for Joomla 1.7?

    • Probably a silly question for all you pros but are we going to have the same headache upgrading from Joomla 1.6 to 1.7 and 1.7 to 1.8 as we are having with 1.5 to 1.6?

    • You should probably wait for Joomla 1.8.

The Joomla team is using a weird release version system and there are long term releases and short term releases.

Joomla 1.5 is a long term release and will be supported for 15 months or something from the time Joomla 1.6 was released.

Joomla 1.6 is a short term release and will not be supported after mid year THIS YEAR.

Joomla 1.7 will be released mid year and will not be supported beyond the end of the year...again THIS YEAR.

Joomla 1.8 will be released at the beginning of next year and will be supported for 15 months and will be the next long term release.

From what I've read, each change over will be a migration and not an update. With the way the Joomla team has been changing all sorts of code, right up to the release, there's no real telling what's going to happen with ease of upgrades.

Any upgrade migration tools that are developed for 1.6 to 1.7 and 1.8 will also be developed for 1.5 to 1.7 and 1.8.

That's the word on the street.

    • Well, from what i've read Joomla 1.7 and 1.8 should be a mild update on 1.6. So if you develop for 1.6, then upgrading to 1.7 and 1.8 should not be as huge an issue as it is with 1.5 to 1.6. So if you think about it like that, then moving to 1.6,1.7, or 1.8 should be pretty much equivalent. It's just a matter of moving when your comfortable that all the bits and bobs you need (templates, extensions, joomla itself) are ready and stable enough for your needs.

Of course time will tell if things turn out according to plan...

    • That gives me more options now. I was worried that I may not be able to upgrade from 1.5 to 1.7 or 1.8. Thanx guys for clearing that up! :D

    • An update is where you just FTP the new files over the old files to update your install. Your database and content stays the same.

A migration requires a new install with the new version and then you would use a migration tool that will pull in your content from your old database and then you also move your files like content images over. This way usually requires some work with new configuration settings and stuff too.

    • Wow, I'd say this sucks...
One would figure that since J1.6 has incorporated many new features, it would be released under long term support and further releases would be built on that.

Sounds as if Joomla developers suddenly thought they are all by themselves in the universe...I mean they should make migration really-really trouble-free for that to work...

Otherwise, why should all the template/extension developers even bother with the short term support releases?
It seems to me they are just officializing a developement release, in the sense that it would be good to give template/extension developers out there a heads up on what is coming for the next big release and have them build their software in a way that would also make it easily upgradable, so as to achieve a development process with larger continuity instead of big breaks or ruptures between releases...

But why the f*** make those short term releases available to the public?

Really I don't know if this works in favor of web developers (in the sense of increasing the frequency of website updates > costs to the customer) or against them (in part in the same sense as in giving them more work to do, by having them worry more about website updates and small development cycles)

I think it is bad choice to have J1.6 as short term release.
      - People want/need the new integrated features and they have waited a long time for them
      - it would be better - I think - to accumulate a larger user base for J1.6 as it would be more related to future updates,
      - At this point it might also be easier for other developers working with Joomla extensions

Although I am really not in the know, I would assume they are doing this because J1.6 may just not be an all too finished product...I can't find any other solid reason why it shouldn't be the new long term support release...
