joomla1.6 template manager broken with ganty_plugin

developing new j1.6 website. New install, first thing installed was Entropy 16 bundle. Installed without errors but subsequently when going to template manager.....the page is blank.
1. uninstalling template .....no change
2. disable gantry library and component.....no change
3. disable gantry system plugin.....voila! template manager page re-appears
gantry version are all 3.2.2
apache httpd 2.2.3ph
php v 5.2.17

There can be a number of reasons for this.
The first one is "not enough memory allowed for PHP" and that can be set in php.ini if you have access to that.
The other reason could be permission errors.
The third reason could be a conflict between plugins. The most common conflict is with cache plugins. - Please reply with a direct link to the issue & create a new thread for each new issue.

well there were no other plugins installed since the template was the first and only thing installed.
I'd thought about the permissions thing and set the entire website to 777 to test......still broken
So that leaves me with php memory.....how much should I set it to?
phpinfo says memorylimit =128M

Turning joomla debug doesn't even help because after enabling the gantry-system plugin and trying to view the template manager...completely blank page and no debug information shown
firebug just shows <html><head></head><body></body></html>....as in it completely crashed that request !

I am also having problems getting to the mercado template manager. When I click on the template within the site template manager, a blank page comes up. The url is:
testwebsite.mee2organics.com/administrat...task=style.edit&id=8
I am able to access the other templates on the site.
I've upgraded the RokNavMenu to version 1.5.
