Updating New Versions of Extensions and Templates

  • Updating New Versions of Extensions and Templates

    • I am a Joomla newb and completely used to Drupal. I have noticed there is a new version of both my template and one of my extensions. Although this is a simple question can someone please tell me the safe and preferred way to update to a new version of the extensions and templates?

Also in Drupal there is the Status Report that tells me everything going on or updates that need to happen. Does such a thing exist in Joomla so I do not have to constantly search and see if updates are available for the extensions?

    • Here's a good blog post about updating your template. It's really just about keeping track of the files you've changed and making sure to make the same changes to the new files.

In most of the extensions, you'll want to do the same thing if you've made customizations so you keep your changes, but you'll also find and "Upgrade Instructions" section in the download area. Look under the Joomla 1.5 version of the RokBox plugin and you'll see it there. It will let you know if you can just FTP the new files over or if you should uninstall and re-install. Most of the time it's just a matter of uploading the new files over the old ones.

    • Thank you Ben, great info.

PS - What about the second part with Drupal? Is anything available that will show you all extensions and what extensions are available for an update?

    • There isn't an overall status thing for Joomla, so it's a little bit of a pain to keep track of everything, but some extensions, larger ones, have a check for updates and let you know about them. Akeeba Backup has that.

For RocketTheme stuff, the developers make a blog post about all updates that are issued for Joomla templates and extensions, so you can check back regularly or use the RSS feed...

    • Thank you! The updates or the lack thereof from a notification standpoint is one of the only things I have not liked about Joomla.
