Question about Zephyr before I purchase

  • Question about Zephyr before I purchase

Posted 14 years 3 weeks ago
    • I'm leaning towards the Joomla club (over the WP club) after a lot of research today about CMS. I'm also digging the Zephyr template for a gaming community. But I had a couple questions regarding that template before I make the big leap here.

      1) There are 4 images below the larger image (I believe that's roksStories that it is under??). These 4 images can move right and left, displaying other images. But in both FF and IE, they are not clickable. They don't do anything, other than "look nice". Is this area supposed to serve a purpose or just look cool (which it does btw)? If it isn't intended to do more...can you make it do more? Like link to a page of the site or something? Just not sure what the designers had in mind here is all.

      2) It is atm, specifically a 1.5 theme. I realize that many themes are being updated to 1.6. Is this one on the list? If not...is there a reason why? Will it be the case that I have to use 1.5 forever if I want to use this particular theme?

If it will be updated, how will it be updated on the client end? That is, how would I update it? Obviously, Joomla core and the template would need to both be updated. Do you give step-by-steps on how to do this somewhere when it needs to be done?

    • There are plans to update the gantry templates, but Joomla 1.6 is still not really a stable product and all the changes they are making is causing updates for templates and other extensions to be a real pain and to be really time consuming.

Joomla 1.6 also is the start of a different release schedule for Joomla and what they support and for how long.

      http://blog.lynda.com/2011/02/23/joomla-development-news-an-interview-with-jen-kramer-lynda-com-author/

That article has a good write up of why things seem more chaotic.

There will be a better upgrade path in the future for sites that are on 1.5 but they haven't even started the plans for it yet. 1.6 is only an interim release and will expire in August, so a lot of people are staying away from it all together.

1.5 is supported longer than 1.6 and 1.7 will be. Confusing, I know, and it's driving lots of people crazy, but long story short, you're fine to go with Joomla 1.5 and there are plans for an easier upgrade than things were from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5.

    • For the four images (Fusion with MegaMenu etc.) those are nor clickiable (they just look cool).
      demo.rockettheme.com/aug10/

They are Articles displayed in an extension called RokIntroScroller.
You could make them clickable. Tho I dont'use Zephyr myself.
But I use the RokIntroScroller here together with RokBox (the modal window thing)

(I just didn't link the images, I used that little "+")
Something like that could be done in Zephyr too ...

    • Well...what could those 4 images be used for (asking for creative input here). I like the style, it seems as if the style kinda needs those 4 images as it really helps the page a lot IMO.

I guess I'm asking for creative or practical ideas from those who have been doing this longer. I want to use that style and I'm very close to making the leap...but I'm struggling to find a real use for that area considering that there is already a quality navigation area, the larger image area has article stuff...I just can't think of what to do with the 4 images area...and it makes me wonder if that template will actually work for me.

    • You don't have to use that module :-)
      Many people like Zephyr :-)

    • How do you turn off that module in WordPress Zephyr?

There are no settings to turn it off, and it does not appear in the widgets.

I removed all the articles and this displays in a fullscreen box:

Sorry, but your category is empty!

Am I going to have to hack code?
