Speed Up The 1.6 Template updates!

  • Speed Up The 1.6 Template updates!

    • Geez. I can't tell you how disappointed I am at the progress you have made updating your 1.5 template to 1.6 I check back all the time and I am growing weary.
When everything is going to the new era of the Joomla 1.6 platform I can not continue to use 1.5 templates for my customers. I have to stay with the current changes to be able to deliver what ever is coming with Joomla.
Would you please update your 1.5 so I can use them and you will also see an increase in the interest for these template products from others.

      Thank you.

    • Joomla 1.6 only has another 2 months until it's not supported anymore. This recent Joomla 1.6 update or the next might be the last you see of it.

Joomla 1.5 is supported through this time next year.

This means tons and tons of changes to make each time there's an upgrade and already looking at Joomla 1.7.

If you're really needing Joomla 1.6 for something that Joomla 1.5 just doesn't have, then it's alright to use. But, if you're not using those features, and Joomla 1.5 covers it, you might be better served waiting until Joomla offers an upgrade path for Joomla 1.8...released at the end of this year.

Don't use Joomla 1.6 just because you think it's the newest stable version...it's a work in progress and a different name for Joomla 1.8 beta. Joomla 1.8 is the next "long term" supported release after Joomla 1.5.

Because of this different release schedule and if you want state of the art functions and designs, you'll need to work with the update timescale as Joomla has planned this whole year for a "development" phase for Joomla 1.8. It's not the same thing that you were used to with Joomla before.

    • Then why bother converting them at all....honestly.

If we hold true to that line of thinking...Why by a new PC? We all realize the PC you buy today was more than likely obsolete when you bought it. One will be out in a few months (weeks) faster and better. Why upgrade your OS on your phone/computer/whatever something will be out a few months later to trump it and make it obsolete.

I've seen lots of posts on this same topic. But honestly I haven't seen an official response from Joomla. And if it is the case, my question is this....why bother? Keep it in Beta and don't tout it to the minions as the next best thing since sliced bread and shirt pockets. And don't post it on the front of your web site for all to see and download.

Joomla 1.6 is here, it's available and people are using it. Wether or not it is here for 6 months or 6 years Rockettheme needs to support it or people will go elsewhere to find templates and extensions. To sit back and say, "nah...we'll wait for the next version" is just stupid business sense in an open source world where things appear and disappear rather quickly.

    • guys ...

the team is working hard on the 1.6 templates.
Sadly the so called "security update" 1.6.2 was a lot more than that. It was a major release.
      www.joomlaos.de/releases/changelog1.6.2stable.txt
So many things changed. And because it broke so many things 1.6.3 will be released shortly.
Devs have to adjust the templates for every release of Joomla 1.6.
Nothing is easy at the moment with Joomla 1.6.

    • I agree Henning. It's tough to stay on track. My reply was more sarcasm at the nay sayers.

But with all the silly talk about Joomla 1.6 being supported for 6 months. I just think it's improper to spread fear and rumor that Joomla 1.6 is only a temporary stepping stone to a newer and better version. I mean honestly...what if it is? I was just making a point to say ...isn't everything a stepping stone? If it wasn't I'd still be pecking away at the keys of my TRS-80, my cellphone would be the size of a brick and I'd ride a horse to work.

Not really sure how you got that from what I typed. All I'm saying is that yes, you can choose Joomla 1.6, but if you do, you'll have to be tolerant of some longer release times for updates as it's a highly changing system.

As far as when to update, no you don't need every new version of the iPhone...if you have the money for it, then sure...but sometimes it's beneficial to skip a version or two and save yourself some time and money.

There's new options in 1.6 and if they are beneficial to you, then sure, move to it. If you're happy with what's in 1.5, then maybe stick with it for a little while longer and let some of the quirks in the new system get worked out before making the jump.
