Membership or Subscription Joomla Question

I have never created a subscription website before and after researching a few brands (
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/e-commerce/paid-membership-a-subscriptions
) I still couldn't tell you if they will do what I need.
My setup is very basic. I want to have a members area on my website. A simple link to a secure content area that appears after they setup a monthly subscription and login.
1. Can this be done with the existing login feature?
2. If not, what extensions have you had the best experiences with?
