Are current templates and extensions compatible or do we have to wait again for compatible templates and extensions?

- There are breaking changes in Joomla 1.7 even though it's the upgrade path from 1.6. Alas we can't really make our 1.6 templates/extensions compatible with 1.7 until 1.7 is officially released as it will break compatibility with 1.6. Fun isn't it!

They plan to release on 19th July..
Hope you can get some templates / extensions out shortly after then as the wait on 1.6 wasn't great.

- I wonder why the templates/extensions can't be ready at the time of 1.7 release. 1.7 betas are released for that reason too aren't they? For the developers to prepare the templates and extensions. Why can't the templates and extensions be developed now and released as 1.7 is released?

Probably because things constantly change and many features are most likely broken and fixed and re-broken throughout the beta

For the developers to prepare the templates and extensions.
If that would only be true. Sadly it's not. The reason is things are constantly changing as Nic said.
Remember 1.6.0 was almost unusable and with 1.62 to 1.63 almost everything changed again.

Actually with steady often updated releases it is better. But that is of course if you can develop in a mentality that is conducive to logic and reason. I am still not developing in 1.6 for clients. Why? My clients prefer their sites remain live consistently and reliably. I'll move to 1.6 sometime after 1.7 is made available as a release and plenty of people have used 1.6 thoroughly. I don't like using my clients as Beta testers.
Just use 1.7 on your local development environment and have a lot of fun developing a new release. :cheesy: - When someone is impatient and says, "I haven't got all day," I always wonder, How can that be? How can you not have all day?
