With J1.6, there was no official migration script, so basically if you wanted to use J1.6, you had to start from scratch, and then cut and paste content from the old site to the new one.
OK, thanks for that . . . I guess we'd also then need to install the 1.6 version of the template that is available and wait for the 1.7 version to be released.
I might point out that there is nothing wrong with continuing to use 1.5, all of our templates are compatible with it and 1.7 will be gone in a matter of months anyway to make way for 1.8 which will be a long term release. After going through some upgrade and compatibility nightmares, I'm personally waiting until 1.8 to upgrade any of my live sites. Just my opinion.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.
It's a nightmare for the devs, but it's a nightmare for the webmasters too, that pay subscriptions and don't hava any warranty that a skin should work with a version. If one has to start a new site with Joomla! software, what do you suggest to do? J1.5?, J1.6?, J1.7? And after the suggestion: what works with the suggested one? I've spent almost my day on Rockettheme trying some answer to those question: where the hell of templates that work with J1.7 are? And why no rokbox, no other extension (modules) appear to work properly (or for nothing) on a J1.7 fresh installation? No advice at all.
My personal question: what does work with Joomla (the last out from the official site) from your production or thirdy part suggested scripts?? Can you specify if it DOES or DOESN't with j!1.7? it's a waste of time.
I hear you man, a lot of people feel the same way. Bottom line, use 1.5 and you don't have to deal with any of it. 1.5 will be supported until the middle of 2012, so it's not going anywhere until 1.8 has been out for a considerable amount of time. There should be an upgrade path at that time, we can only hope that it's not a nightmare.
Right now Camber is the only official 1.7 template release with 1.7 compatible extensions. You're rolling the dice on anything else. Everything works with 1.5, not only here but everywhere else as well. Not sure why people are in such a hurry to upgrade when there is little support and compatibility for 1.7 and 1.5 works just fine - but that is just my opinion.
