Joomla 1.7?

  • Joomla 1.7?

    • I am currently still using Joomla 1.5 and I usually do not like updating and people have an obsession with taking something that works and changing it completely. I am unsure whether to install 1.7 in case they have done this.

      Is it worth upgrading to 1.7 or shall I just keep with 1.5? I am comfortable with 1.5 but I am guessing 1.7 will have better features or something.

    • 1.5 will be supported until the middle of 2012, there is no hurry to upgrade. My opinion is that if it works, stick with it. The new version of Joomla will be released early 2012 and 1.7 will be gone at that point. I'm personally waiting for that version to become stable before I think about upgrading. Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

    • Joomla 1.5 will be support until the beginning of April 2012. Until then you won't have a compelling reason to migrate until you find an extension or feature that is only available in 1.7. Not everyone is going to move right away and several, if not most, will wait until they're forced to. Example would be when their favorite plugin is no longer supported in 1.5 or something like that.

      For me its worth starting the migration now because I have a lot of clients to move. As I run in to problems it gives me time to resolve them before next year.

      Eventually you will want to migrate. Interesting new features include one click version updating, improved categories, built-in validation, and improved permissions.

    • Having tried and failed to successfully migrate ANY 1.5 sites to either 1.6 or 1.7 we came to the decision that we leave sites as they are for the moment and will move to 1.8 as and when that is released, bug tested and stable. It's pointless for us to build anything in 1.7 at the moment when 1.5 works so well, is so well supported with modules and components and the fact that this 1.7 version will ALSO be scrapped next year.

    • Just to clarify, 1.6 is the "Stable" long-term release. 1.7 and 1.8 are six month releases and there will be more... every six months in fact ;)

      In simple terms...
      1.5 -> 1.6 Big Change
      1.6 -> 1.7 small change
      1.7 -> 1.8 small change

    • That's the theory . . . but 1.7 seemed to come out before people were even aware that 1.6 was available lol. I still have the feeling that 1.5 will continue to be supported well past April 2012 simply because of the HUGE numbers of people that won't have upgraded.

    • Thanks for the feedback guys,

      I will stay with 1.5 then until I have to.

      Is there a reason for these 1.7, etc, or does Joomla just have too much money to waste?

    • It's all 'improvements' in the code and functionality and also bug fixes. There was a lot wrong with the 1.0 version of Joomla that got 'fixed' in 1.5 which we've all been using for some years now, and these new releases are doing the same thing, making it easier and more flexible to use (in theory), expanding on the functionality and capabilities and fixing bugs that have cropped up.

    • I'm curious how the one-click-updating will be reflected with the latest builds of templates from Rockettheme...I welcome the ability to do this in minutes rather than the way it's been done for some time...

      Will the new templates incorporate these new features? How will it affect updating Gantry...will Gantry update from that search for updates area or continue from the Gantry area?

      I'm really looking forward to the new Joomla...
