I know quite a lot about SEO and traffic generation and have the other bases covered such as H1, articles, PPC, press releases, long tail keyword research, blah blah. This was not a starting point but rather the icing on the cake. It's not so much a case of finding out what to do but rather how to do it in Joomla.
In any case I really apprciate your advise as I am still learning when it comes to Joomla and in particular php. I used to do asp in dreamweaver before discovering Joomla.
My apologies for assuming you hadn't done any of that already Christopher. I assumed so because those joomla hacks (changing default contentheading to H1 etc) are IMO more difficult to do then the hand coded menu.
By default I don't believe they do, but I would assume this can be easily fixed by changing the core joomla css selectors eg. contentheading, componentheading etc.
There is a sample css file you can download at a8ejoomla. You can compare it with your RT template of choice and change where required. Will be time consuming, but doable.
That said, if you have implemented all the hacks you mentioned earlier, your site might already be as good as an a8ejoomla one SEO wise.
If you look in the index.php file (or use the edit html button in the template manager) you can change the template parameters which are written at the top of the file.
One of these parameters should be the menu type.
