New to Joomla; new to Rocket - need help with step 0

I an experienced web designer with many sites and wordpress sites.
But I'm a Joomla newbie wanting to use it for a new site.
I joined Rocket. Have chosen some themes. Confused, but determined, I downlloaded all the various file packs assocciated with each template. After fumbling around and trying allmost everything I discovered that Joomla template install evidently wants the .tgz file, so I've now got a couple themes onsite and one set as default.
But I've got ALL these OTHER downloads with what appear to be important template stuff like images, "components", "modules" (whatever those are), etc.
And I've got something which originally promised me it would install everything with one or two clicks and then refused to do so because it was lacking an appropriate XML file.
I haven't been able to find a decent tutorial that takes me from step 0 (like telling me what the heck PARTS there are to a joomla site ... can I turn them off and on in templates... in other words how do I work with this thing? And what the heck should I DO with all these other darned zip files which are evidently missing part of the templates I've installled.
