    Dissappointed :(

Posted 13 years 3 months ago
    • I joined RocketTheme when I decided to move from WP CMS to Joomla. I have a basic understanding of Joomla CSS PHP, mySQL, etc. What I don't have is an understanding of why RT is so poorly set up. As a newbie I have a lot of questions yet finding answers here is like digging through an archive of 3x5 cards tossed about by a tornado. Example:

Nothing works. That is, I installed J 2.5, the latest Gantry and the Camber template. When I click on Gantry or Camber in admin to look at the style options, I get a blank screen. After a half hour of various word combinations I found a similar question posted by another here in the forums. Rather than an RT mod answering it, he/she chastised the OP for putting it in the wrong board and provided a link to another now closed Gantry troubleshooting post. In that post, a myriad of possibilities are given as to why Gantry and an RT template may not work with very little specifics to the original question.

Example 2: So, templates are supposed to be 2.5 compatible because Gantry--which I cant get to work in 2.5--supposedly is. Why the hell then are so many template instructions still marked as for 1.5?

Example 3: JoomlaShack is all over 2.5, rich with info for newbies and generally a much cleaner, intuitive environment to work in. I guess I'll just write off my $90 paid to RT because, so far, I have only gotten headaches for my money.

    • I'll try my hardest to not take sides here... but..

Joomla! 2.5 was just released, 99% of the developers aren't updated yet fully to 2.5. If you look at the amount of product RT offers to their users and the amount of work that goes into each product, you might start to see it will take a company more then a week to get everything working with 2.5.

Now moving from WP to RT in my honest opinion was a good move, I hate WP, my unnamed company uses WP and has spent countless dollars in customization to get it to where it's at now.

Now I would suggest using Joomla! 1.7 since Cambers works perfect on it because I'm running a site with it. RT has posted that you should only use J! 2.5 on test sites until everything is worked out. If you scan each theme's forums you will notice that the more knowledgeable members are posting the bugs and finding fixes for them to help RT out.

I've been with RT for a few years now and they have been a blessing in web design for joomla compared to other companies. But I strongly suggest going to Joomla 1.7 for a month or so and then upgrade your site when everything is worked out.

Now I did have the same problem your having with the blank screen, make sure you Gantry is updated and then log out and log back in. Make sure you clear your cache and it should appear. Thats what I did for my test site with 2.5 and Tachyon Template

    • I came here as a RT fan, but as time went by, I've got also a little disappointed with some aspects. For instance, 3rd party extensions are not very welcome when using a RT template, maybe because of Gantry framework, but the other side also occurs: RT extensions do not run so well with other templates, and to make them to work is a pain in the neck (I am sorry, but this is my experience). I gave up to try to install and configure many of the extensions, just because it is so frustrating and painful, that I prefer not to use it anymore.

I know how much affort a company makes to get in the right place and I don't think that RT is trying not to get in the right place, but we (developers and webdesigners) also have clients and want to get in the top, so we count on companies like RT to help us to get there (I already said this in another post). This is why is so important that RT listen to complains like this, so they can provide us a even more efficient work (it is already, but not enough for me).

My last frustration was with RokGallery, which I advertised to my client as a great component and something to rely on. While I was configuring it I had so many erros and had to reinstall it so many times that I had to tell to my client that I've made a mistake pointing RokGallery and we had to move to another solution. Now, some may say: why didn't you repot the erros here? Well, I saw the same erros on the forum, with answers that lead to nowhere and a new one with no replay yet - it will be replied, I know)... but that is not the point, the point is that we need to have something more reliable, so we can trust that we will sell something stable and flexible.

I do not agree with the idea that you should use Joomla 1.7, specially because you don't find this version on the official website anymore. Joomla 2.5, if I understood well, is just a final version based on 1.7. Yes, there are some differences, and things to adjust, but....

Tab, I am sorry for what you are feeling and sympathise with your frustration, but I think that we should give RT a vote of trust and hope that things will be in place very soon. RT is here for a long time and if they weren't competents, they wouldn't be here for this long.

I've forgot to say one very important thing: We have to take in consideration that RT is one of the best in terms of Design, they really rock. It's something very useful to advertise to clients.

So, I still believe on RT, give them some time and believe it too. :)

      hi there,

apologies that you did not get a reply to your post, i have requested your user details here:
      www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=55..._v=viewtopic#p774810
Example 2: So, templates are supposed to be 2.5 compatible because Gantry--which I cant get to work in 2.5--supposedly is. Why the hell then are so many template instructions still marked as for 1.5?
all our templates support joomla 1.5.
a lot of the templates are also available for joomla 2.5, more are going to follow.
you can find the compatibility chart here:
      www.rockettheme.com/joomla-templates/compatibility-matrix

gantry is also available for both versions of joomla.

      hi there,

sorry to hear about your frustration too. regarding the compatibility with our templates, extensions and the gantry framework i just like to add some information here:

joomla itself is running with mootools. in joomla 1.5.x it was mootools 1.12, then in joomla 1.5.23 the mootools upgrade plugin was added to allow switching from the default mootools 1.12 to 1.2.
joomla 1.6 and 1.7 was based on mootools 1.3, joomla 12.5 is using mootools 1.4.

now, what are our templates and extensions using? mootools. :)

there are other developers who are not using mootools but use jquery or other javascript libraries and that's where incompatibilities caused by javascript conflicts can occur. so this should be kept in mind when trying to mix and match templates and extensions from different providers. in general we have noted this in our terms of service, that we just can not guarantee 100% compatibility with everyone else's products.

      hope that's helpful.

anyways, thank you all for any positive comments, we appreciate it. :)
if you do have any unanswered forum topics up, feel free to post back with a link so we can get them checked out and help to find solutions.

    • Disappointed is the right word for me too, I just joined a few days ago, thinking that a paid service might give more reliable results than open source. Since then I have spent countless hours trying to get Camber to work for a Joomla 2.5 site. One problem has been spotty information about what files I need. Biggest problem, though, is that the Camber admin interface never shows up or vanishes.

First I tried installing on an existing site, after worked out that I had to add RokNavMenu separately (what's up with that, anyway?) and Gantry, and extensions. It sort of functioned, but I couldn't configure it because the template admin interface disappeared. So today I tried Rocketlauncher 2.5, which is supposedly complete. But it didn't work at all until I found out on the forums that I still had to install rokGallery separately (why not mention this somewhere in the instructions?), and then I got a notification that I also needed to update Gantry, which I did via the update button, and after that there was again no camber admin interface, just the tp=1 screen. Gantry also does not appear. There were other back-end problems as well. Does anything actually work? Can this template be saved? Is Camber 2.5 just not ready for prime time? And if this is how everything works at Rockettheme, can I get my $90 back?

      Thank you.

    • In the Template Manager: Styles
on the top right you find "options".
Click on that and select: Preview Module Positions "Disabled" instead of "Enabled"

I just download the Camber-RL and also had an issue.
I'll ask the devs to take a look at it.
      Sorry for the inconvenience ...

    • The Camber RL has been updated, there was an error in the SQL that has now been rectified. Please either, redownload the Camber RL, or download the latest version of RokGallery, and install that (no need to uninstall, as it'll just update the current entry). Apologies for the inconvenience.
