Total Noob? How-to have cleaner url paths?

Currently all my url paths look like
www.mydomain.com/index.php?option=com_co...id=13&Itemid=29
;
I would like to have a simple path www.mydomain.com/contact_us .
I'm sure this is very simple but I can't figure this out :-[

sh404SEF is great.
Now if I can get it to work with my .htacess file and remove the index.php life will be perfect-almost :

I tried both of the recommendations sh404SEF,OpenSEF but could not get either to work. It's something to do with my .htaccess config and or how apache2 is working/not working with .htaccess.
sh404SEF has a exclenct forum but I was unable to find anything on OpenSEF. The www.open-sef.org/ is a dead link.
Any ideas ???
