Lossless compression?

- I have been using the new(er) Ionosphere template and it has that monstrously large photo on the front showcase. I like it, it works perfectly for what I am doing, but it seems to need something on the order of a 980x430 photo. Does anyone have a recommended program for reducing the size without losing too much quality --- as obviously it would be noticeable in a large photo. Normally I just photoshop but I was wondering if there might be something a bit more simple. 1 mb photos are not great for my load times.
