Strange links to joomla sites and update

Hi there,
I have couple of websites with rockettheme and some times ago experienced weird behavior. It appears in strange links from search engines. More details http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=428&t=708020 . One idea was about hacked installation and advise was to update Joomla.
My websites are run as rocketluancher and I'm not sure if update from official joomla applicable. Does it? Any specific instruction to update for latest 1.5.xx version? Any thing that I should concern before update except backing up current installation? I afraid of some small things that appear due to editing template (and maybe core files - didn't remember). And so if I have no access to template forum since buying template, I feel nervous to handle again all editing.
Maybe updating is not good idea?
