    SEO

Posted 17 years 9 months ago
    • I'm finding that most joomla sites/templates are not very SEO friendly?
      Why?

I see alot of plugins/extentions that address this issue? Suggestion on which one to use?
I'm currenlty using the elemental rockettheme template. Just getting started So I wanted to start off right!

Things I can do to help this? Setting up section etc.?

      J.

    • Go to extensions.joomla.org and check out the SEO section. I rate OpenSEF quite well :)

    • I have a further question about this.... I was using a template from another site (yes ... it wasn't Rocketthemes but I'm coming back!), and I saw huge drop in search engine traffic over the past 30 days. In looking in their support forum people were complaining about the template and the way it was written. It did not have the metadata at the top and therefore instructions like "skip content, skip item" were appearing in the search engines!

Can a template have that much of an affect and are the Rockettheme templates SEO friendly?

      Thanks!

    • The way the template is written has alot to do with SEO. There are plenty with articles on how to optimize your template for SEO.

    • Thanks for the quick reply! Are you comfortable that the templates here are optimized? I would hate to move to yet another one, regardless of how good it looks, if it kills my placement. Is there some way to "test" a template before you use it?

      Thanks much!

    • As far as I can see the templates here are SEO friendly. Good code, good use of title tags, ...

Off course some things should be done by you:
      - in site configuration, make sure the meta title and keywords are filled.
      - With the articles you can give extra keywords in the side tabs, use this !
      - Use some SEF tool (not the build-in one) like Opensef, JoomSef, ...
      - Check the keyword density of your site (google for programs)
      - some external links to your site always help

    • Thanks ... I am doing all those things... SEFAdvanced for URL's as well as JPromoter to "flip" the site title with the article title so it appears first in the title (and therefore in the search engines). I always add keywords with my articles. I really appreciate your suggestions!

I was just amazed at what an impact that one template had on my site in only 30 days. I am therefore assuming that if one can negatively effect you that much hopefully optimized themes can help you!

      Thanks again!

    • I have just discovered a real SEO problem that I am not sure how to fix. I don't know if it is the template or not. One one site I am using Sporticus Gator version at http://www.maxfitnessacademy.com.  I just ran a spider test http://tools.summitmedia.co.uk/spider/index.php?c=by+the+Summit+Media+Spider

Almost 99% of my front page text is not showing up - just the title and the banner text! It's a nightmare.

On another site I am using ijoomla magazine ( www.drivetobefit.com ) and all of the front page text is being spidered.

Does anyone have any insight to this major problem. TIA

I am using advanced SEF and SEF patch on both sites, so that part is ok.

please allow me to correct this. meta information put n the global configuration will be added to all pages. however, it is highly unlikely that all pages will actually have those keywords so this could work against you as google will judge your keywords to not be relevant to the actual content of that page. for this reason joomla seo guru's advise against it using the global meta tags at all. only use the meta tags on the actual article pages.
