Layout default_links not found

I am working on a Joomla 1.7 site on localhost. I can't yet upgrade to J2.5 (last time I tried site exploded, so I am doing a manual rebuild).
Problem: using an older J1.7 Enigma template, all works well. However, after installing both clarion and Diameteric (J2.5), content links do not work, showing the message "Layout default_links not found".

Question: (let's assume I can't upgrade to J2.5 just yet)
It seems I may be missing a default.php template file somewhere? Is that the case? If yes, where should I look for that file?

I'm running joomla 2.5 and have the same problem on my site

The single articles are not displayed, only the category views!
I already swithched of the sef option!

Guys, both of you are having server issues. Work that with your hosting company, check your error logs.
