Editing non default template

OK, might seem like a stupid question BUT I have joomla site that I look after for a sports club and it was a real basic template. I have since been tasked with upgrading to a better one so I have installed one from RocketTheme - Modulus J1.5. Now the issue is when I choosed the new template as the default one, of course it looks different. So different that the menus aren't anywhere to be seen, etc, etc.
So what is the best way to get the new template up and going ASAP without too much disruption. I have attempted to install Joomla onto my PC as a localhost but did not have much joy.
Is there any way to edit a non default template and then publish it once it is all good to go?

First you will need one of these installed and running:
Windows: XAMPP or Uniform Server
Linux: LAMP
OS X: MAMP
And then you will need either:
Joomla 2.5 & the template
Or...
The Rocketlauncher for 2.5.
Joomla 1.5 is not really supported anymore by the Joomla developers.
When you have finished the site on your computer, use Akeeba Backup and copy your site and upload it on your public server.
Done!

Thanks Prim. I have attempted to use the XAMMP, etc, but did not have any success. I kept getting errors when I tried to install the template. Is there another way?

Depending on your hosting account you could create a sub-domain or just install to a new directory.

Just adding one thing. If you can, install on a new database and/or at least use a different database table prefix

OK so would I have 2 seperate Joomla installs? So one would reside in public_html and the other in public_html/test? By using fantastico it will set up the new database for me.
With that, once I have finished, I would need to make some modifications to have the /test version display on the URL right?
I have been playing around and have the original site up and going as well as using the Template Manager >> Edit function and can add a new page to the site that no one can see. I am having trouble though getting the menu items to display on the page.

Hi John,
In effect that is correct. At the end you can then take backups of both sites using Akeeba backup. Do not forget to do this as you can then recover from any mistakes in next stages.
Then trash the directories and files of original site (taking care not to delete the subdirectory for the new site) and then move the files from new site directory to root public_html (or your equivalent) and then change the paths in configuration.php
Job done.

Thanks guys. I managed to install it is a sub domain using the Rocket Launcher as the version of Fantastico that my web host provides does not have the ability to install 2.5. All went well suprisingly enough.
Now the challenge will be when I need to make the site live. That might mean a new thread.
