Web / Joomla noob question

I have tried to use the installer for the site templates on the back end admin control panel to install Replicant (or any other template), but am unable to because the 'media/', 'administrator/templates/', and 'templates/' diectories are all listed as 'Unwriteable' - ('images/stories/' is writeable ).
Are these directories unwriteable as a function of something in Joomla itself, or as a function of something that has to do with the web host I use? Either way, any direction I can get on how to make these folders writeable would be greatly appreciated.
I am using Joomla v1.0.12 as installed as a free add-on by the hosting company.

I have the ability to set up FTP access, but its a little trickier than I'm used to, so I will have to get with their tech support to figure it out. Can I change the permissions on the directories through FTP access, or is their a way that you know of to change it through Joomla's CP?

- use your FTP program...to CHMOD all files to 775 and if it doesnt work then change to 777

- I have no idea what CHMOD is, but I remember seeing it somewhere before - I will look into it. I got access via FTP, so its just a matter of changing those permissions, I hope. Thanks for the direction!

ok what FTP proggy do you use?
I use CuteFTP and all I do is select folder>right click>scroll to bottom and seleect CHMOD
then a window pops up, and I change the number to 777

- I have WiseFTP at home, but I'm trying to get a lot of this done during the day from work in between cases, so I have only been able to access ftp on the site thru (gasp) IE7 ( I know, I know). When I get home this evening, I will check it out. Hope against hope that its as easy as right-clicking and seeing the CHMOD option in the context menu! ;D

OK, so I FTPed the site to chmod the permissions, only to find out the hosting company doesn't allow write permissions to directories within applications installed from their CP - weird (read:dumb). Soooo, after a long, drawn-out affair with tech support, I ended up having to uninstall all the apps from within the site's CP and install Jommla from the ground up the really old-fashioned way, via FTP, and of course - I can't get it to work. The install page won't come up when I bring up the site, I get error 404 page instead.
Where do I go from here?
