SOLVED XAMPP Mac Joomla RocketTheme

Hey guys, I thought I would turn to my RocketTheme community.
Normally when I build sites I just build in a subfolder on the web space. Recently, I decided to download XAMPP and see about building on my Mac first.
Installing XAMPP was fine. Got the system started and everything was seemingly fine. Wanting to be able to run different test sites, I created a subfolder in the HTDOCS folder it told me to use. I installed Joomla. I got an error towards the end about the configuration.php file not being writeable. In fact there was no configuration.php file and I needed to create it. Joomla of course gave me the details for the file at the end of the installation. I also noticed that when I clicked the delete installation files in the file step nothing happened to my joomla folder (directory was not deleted).
I deleted the files manually, and I created and placed the configuration.php file. The next problem was that I couldn't install a RT template (FRESCO) via the normal method or using the TMP directory install.
I believe the problems are related to permission settings. I tried to change the permission of the entire XAMPP directory and apply it to the subfolders and then I got a MYSQL error. I don't remember the error and at this point I was so frustrated that I figured I would just go back to my normal method of building in a subfolder of the web space. ... So I deleted XAMPP.
Eventually, I think I would like to try XAMPP again, as there are times I am in places with no WIFI and I would be able to keep working until I got to WIFI.
Anyone have some ideas of how to get things to work as they should? I went to the XAMPP site and searched online but I couldn't find solutions. At least none that seemed to work.
