I'm currently looking to an eCommerce solution for a client. I was going to go with Ecwid but client will eventually have over 20,000 products which will cost $99/month. Not acceptable. So I am now looking at AceShop. But then I found Magento here which I've never looked at. What is Magento and is it an eCommerce Solution? Thanks and sorry if this is an elementary question.
Magento is it's own CMS or Inventory Management System. When you use Magento, you create the entire site in it. Ecwid, AceShop, VirtueMart, etc., are typically added to existing (mostly Joomla) sites. Which is what I'm guessing you are doing.
Some developers like the inventory management of Magento and the site management of Joomla so they'll use a bridge such as Magebridge. If you choose to do it this way you'll still have to spend significant time learning Magento and configuring it. Mangento is notorious for it's steep learning curve. The silver lining is that Magento is much more powerful that the other cart or eStore systems IMO.
You can create a Magento site for free using the community edition and see what it's all about.

Although I'm not a VM fanboy (and after reading most of the VM reviews on JED), I'd have to credit most of the bad ones to previous VM 1.x users switching to VM 2.x and losing some features and 3rd party extension support. I'm not including the reviews that were simply saying VM 2.x is hard to use. I felt the same way about the move though VM 2 is a different animal.
BTW I've recently started using MijoShop on a clients site and I'm pleased with it. I know they'll have to update to the paid plan to really get what they want but it seems like a good cart.
The MijoShop extension is completely contained within Joomla just like the other options I mentioned before. So the previous comparison (Magento vs. "The rest") still applies.
