Criticism of RT templates: too heavy?

Posted 12 years 6 months ago
    • I recently hooked up with a developer on Joomla.org forum who has a good reputation and is active on the boards. In checking out one of my projects, he suggested I avoid RT templates:
Rockettheme is still not \"responsive\" (mobile suited) and extremely heavy because it has to load Gantry. We strongly suggest a move to any of the responsive templates (from Nano2 onwards) of Yootheme with its marvelous widgetkit

      Thoughts?

    • Hi there,

Perhaps not as active as they could be, bearing in mind the last 4 RT templates have all been responsive to some degree. The latest ones are fully repsonsive but of course that does mean a new learning curve for some people.

While we load the gantry framework, yootheme loads their warp framework, so not a big gain there either.

Most web developers will have their preferred choice of template, often to maximise their subscription to a club. Obviously it also helps if you get used to a specific style from a club. As a freelancer I often try and lead my clients to RT templates because they are quicker for me to edit and adjust. Sometimes personal opinions will cloud the statements that people make. :cheesy:

      Hope this helps 8)

    • I have worked with both: Yootheme and Rockettheme (also with others, but let's talk about these guys). I can tell you; if you make (with both builders) a website that is filled in with nice pictures and a lot of modules on the frontpage, every website will be heavy. I think if you would do the same to another templatebuilder website, you will have the same heavy result. I think Gantry is a better way than the framework from Yootheme, also the templates from RT do it more for me, but that is my opinion. It is also easier to work with imo.
You can test website speed at tools.pingdom.com to check the differences: tools.pingdom.com . If you see the RT templates, you see that they have a heavy frontpage, true. But that is to let you see what possabilities are with that template. Most template builders show one picture, maby two and then say: Look how fast our new template is! But in reality you will need more pictures to make it a realistic and attractive business website.
PS: If you doubt about the speed of gantry; try de demo site from gantry on the pingdomtools, I think it would not getting any faster... Good luck!
