Joomla to Wordpress giving unusual 404 error links

Posted 12 years 5 months ago
    • I have worked with Joomla! for around six years and decided to change one of my websites to WordPress. Quite simply I found WordPress easier to use and not so bloated.

The first thing I discovered using the Google Webmaster were many 404 errors. Obviously I understand as the indexed links have changed this would happen. However I don't understand why Google has indexed links as below and assume this is from the Rockgallery?

      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?532
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?677
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?524
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?527
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?690
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?542
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?665
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?567
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?388
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?386
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?668
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?559
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?802
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?389
      mysite/modules/mod_slice/slice.swf?494

I am seeking advice from some professional Joomla! developers here. Is this normal behavior to index links as above? Would this not affect page ranking? Is this related to Joomla! only or would links like the above also appear in WordPress?

The only reason I learned about this after numerous years of working with Joomla! was when I changed to WordPress and checked for errors in Google Webmaster!

I am now in my fifth month of adding links like the above to my robots and have had to do this every few days. Hundreds and yet I only had around 20 pages!

I would appreciate any feedback so I may develop and improve my web development skills and understand more (especially as it may affect ranking) to avoid this.

    • Hi, I'm not sure what those are coming from - mod_slice is not one of our modules and RokGallery does not use swf files. I'm guessing it's some kind of flash module, it's not our product.

I believe 404 errors do negatively impact your ranking, but I don't think it's a significant factor in the overall scheme of things when compared to content, page titles and external links. Those always trump everything else.

I'm pretty sure you can exclude the entire folder from being indexed, not exactly sure how though. You might want to google for an answer or contact the developers that make this module.

    • Thanks for your reply Cliff. Problem is I have absolutely no idea and also used easyblog and jomsocial. However, I deleted and rebuilt the whole site in WordPress quite a few months back which is when I discovered all these Google indexed links. I posted here to see if anyone knew of something like this. Have no wish to start a platform war but give me WordPress any-day!

I have spent the last 3 months removing hundreds of strange Google indexed links from my old 25 page Joomla site! :)

    • Hi, I understand. I use both platforms, and I've seen this sort of thing on both. It's poor extension / plugin coding in some cases, possibly incorrect robot.txt file settings in others. Unfortunately, not everything happens automatically and takes a little effort to deal with. These sorts of things are more a case by case basis than something that has a single simple answer.
