The Drawer position, what's up with that?

I've gotten curious about the drawer position in Rockettheme templates. Searching around the forums it seems to me that this is where messages get dispalyed. In other words a user does something, the drawer position appears and displays a message, and then it disappears again. It's also evident that others try to use this position for other purpose such a displaying a logo.
Just looking for some clarification and/or comments.

System messages are by default configured to show in that module position but no one can stop you to use it for normal modules as well
