is it better if i use multiple templates for too many pics?

Hi there,
I am using ionosphere template and i am wondering about something. The site i am bulding will have about 50 submenus which actually loads 50 articles. Each article have a banner photo with size 911x250 and about 50kb and 3-4 small thumbs plus the text. So totally i will have a big load which maybe delay the appearance of the website. Is it better to create more templates about 5-10 maybe so to split the 50 articles or by using multiple templates again the loading of the website will be the same?
If the appearance of the site loads only the default template then i will have the 1/5 of the load to each template but if the loading of the site loads at the same time all the templates then i will not have any improvement.
Thanks

Hi danryant,
i am not sure if this will cover my needs as the video talking about buttons. Actually i want to load images in articles and i will have too many.
also what about compatibility? is ccs sprites compatible with new browsers and osx tablets?
Thanks

I'm using sprites on my site,
www.osacc.com
and seem to be doing fine. I'm actually getting an A rating on yslow because of it. I was at a C.
as for entering sprintes into an article, I'm not sure. I'm very new at all of this and was just trying to toss out the idea as it worked best for me.
My assumption however, is that the sprites would work. They aren't actually buttons. You place all of your pictures on one .png file and map the location. The server finds them and places them for you in the proper place.
Anyone else want to chime in? That's about the extent of my knowledge on it.
