putting link to designer from homepage of client

I am not sure if this is the right place but I need some feedback:
When I build a site, I place a link on the bottom of my client's site to my design site (opening in a new browser).
One of my clients just received an email from another designer soliciting for business and in the email it said:
For example at the minute your website has a link to a web company 'xxx':
I assume they are supposed to be looking after your interests online but this kind of activity is seen as highly unethical and can devalue your website with search engines such as Google limiting the amount of custom you receive through the website. Whilst it greatly helps 'xxx' website by linking to an authoritative site like yours it has the opposite effect on your site and can really hinder your progress.
I am angry but before I knee jerk, is what I did wrong?

It's not illegal but you should talk to the site's owner before putting a link to your company.
As far as SEO goes, it's tricky because Google change their crawler all the time.
If you have many external links linking to your site that are not in the same category as your site it can hurt your search ranking in theory but then it would also affect when users on a forum or social site link to a web shop but that is not the case.
To make it short, i wouldn't worry much about linking from your client to your own company's site as long as the client agrees with putting a link to your site.. - Please reply with a direct link to the issue & create a new thread for each new issue.

Thanks for that - my client was happy about it but I have removed the link.
It was just the one link so cannot truly see how that would muck up google but one never knows these days.
I wish there was a code of conduct for us so that we knew what was right instead of facing this kind of comment and not knowing whether or not we had done something wrong - 16 years of website design and I am feeling a bit old hat.
