Hi there,
At present all of our templates are restricted to max-width of 1200px
The reality is that you need some method of ensuring that the content will get displayed in a sensible manner. On very large screens you could have two single line sentences that, when displayed on a normal size monitor, would be two good paragraphs.
You could look at the mediaqueries.less and consider adding/changing some of the settings or converting them to css code in template_name-custom.css (where template_name is the actual template designated e.g. rt_alerion-custom.css). You may also have to consider how you will cope with extensions that are not responsive.

Coping with unresponsive extensions is already a concern. iJoomla's AdAgency is worthless in responsive templates, and the release date for a responsive version has been pushed back so many times I beginning to doubt I'll ever see it.
What you say makes perfect sense. I have some clients who use 50" HD televisions as monitors, so having full width in that case would just be on long row of modules.
