    Beginners Advice Needed

Posted 11 years 11 months ago
    • I am looking to build a website using Joomla as I am not a programmer and want to use a CMS.

I have tried the locked down versions of Joomla on a couple of websites using different hosting companies but they did not enable me to install rocket themes due to restrictions but they did offer the Joomla 2.5 sampledata.

As its now recommended to start with 3.1 for new sites but my hosting company Plex control panel application install has problems and they do not support Joomla.

So I have undertaken a manual install of rocket launcher Hexeris demo and everything works fine.

As a senior citizen I do not have time or expertise to do more than configuration/install working code and I feel pretty pleased to have got a rocket launcher demo up and running.

My big problem is knowing if this is the best place to start and I have no idea what to unpublish or delete to get me started on a site. My existing site http:\\www.rampantroostermorris.co.uk uses redundant CMS/technology which the hosting Company will take down in June so I will then have no site.

You advice would be much appreciated on how best to start.

      Thanks
      Gally

    • I have a host
      s468317806.websitehome.co.uk/index.php

I have a control panel and FTP access

I have installed a new site from rocket launcher, back it up and restored it using Akeba. So I think I am in a position to start.

I liked the idea of a professional template and Gantry framework and hope this is a possible place to start, but I am not sure how to clean out the demo or at least the bits I do not wish/cannot use.

Would it be better to install a clean installation of Joomla and only install the framework and an appropriate template? or should I start with Joomla 2.5 and modify/add data?

      Any advice much appreciated

    • Hello Gally,

      Glad you got this far.

It's really a matter of choice.

Personally, I like to install the template without the sample data (so I don't take years deleting stuff).

In any case, ans long as you have access to the Control Panel and FTP access, you can install w/o sample data.

Of course, it wont look like the demo, but you will have the the template and the Gantry framework installed.

Once you have got that sorted, you can start customizing you site.

Please let us know if you need further assistance, we will do our best to help you.

      Cheers!
