SOLVED Images 403 Forbidden unless I use Media Manager

    • Hello, I am sure this is a Joomla issue and not so much a template issue but I figured, being a member of Rockettheme, I might get a quicker answer here. I appreciate any help!

I have a fresh install of Joomla 3.0 which was installed via the Oculous RocketLauncher and default htaccess file. I prefer to manage my sites with ftp and ssh. When I move the images to website.com/images/articles/story1/thumbs/image1.jpg and then I try to put that image into an article. The image will not show and when I put the URL into the browser, I get 403 Forbidden. I am using standard 644 permissions. I also tried changing them to 777 and I get the same 403 error.

If I use the Media Manager plugin to create the directories under images and upload the files using that, I do not get any 403 errors. This makes me think the problem is something Joomla specific that I can't find.

I would like the images to show up even if I just drop them into the directories with my FTP client or move them in from another folder on the server using the shell. Perhaps this is a known easy fix.

      Thanks!

    • First, check the "owner" as well as the permissions. Having the wrong owner for a directory can cause the same issues as having the wrong permissions and since it's happening over FTP verses Media Manager, this might be the difference.

Second, if you're creating directories by FTP, you'll want to add the blank "index.html" file in each to keep the directory from being viewable in a web browser. You'll see these in any directory created with Media Manager and can just copy those over to the new ones.

    • Hmm... it looks like I didn't have the owner set to apache. The things you don't notice when you are half asleep. -_-

Thanks, this thread can be closed.
