how to determine the right width

One thing where I'm still struggling with Joomla is how to get the right width of images in a column. I'll try to explain what i mean: suppose I want to place an image in the left column, the width of the left column is relative (say 20%) and you have to deal with margins and paddings that are sometimes hard to find. I wonder if there's an easy way to find out which width I have to use.
