I wish RT would try and keep the modules the same. Last month it was Inset, user1, user2 and user 3. This month it is left/right. Above and below the main area should alway be the same.
An example would be - Modules 1-4 should be used used above or below the mainarea. 5-8 should always be below the main. They are setting standards for CSS, lets take a lead on standards for all templates to use for module positions, if anything, at least RT customers can be sold that you use a standard, so buying RT templates are the best way to go for easy of transition if the customer decides to change templates.
Plug and play.
I guess what is happening is if you have things in inset one month, then inset is not used with a new template, when you plug in the new template, modules are missing. But I guess that may always happen, might not be much one can do about it.
No matter what, there will always be some ajustments.
I just feel that yes, there may be a limit on module positions, but that can always be extended, and of course the designs are suppose to be different to accommodate different style of sites, but maybe an extension of modules that are only used in certain zones, hence the reason right and left was used. But we have expanded, now inset is used not set inside, but on the outside.
Maybe user1-4 will only be used in the upper 1/3 of a page. 5-8 middle, 9-14 lower 1/3. Anything higher is for tabs or the bottom module area.
Left and right is for, well, left or right depending on your layout. Inset, should be for a column that is in the middle of your template.
Footer and header are always used correctly, we need to get the rest of the modules set correctly.
Maybe we need to add horizontal and vertical
We need to set a standard. Basically if one wanted to change templates, they should not have to make a lot of changes to module positions, ideally they should make no changes, Plug and Play.

Well, that wouldn't be a perfect case each month as the templates are different, a module working in the inset(ish) position in one template may just screw up the entire template layout on the next. It makes sense and at the same time, it doesn't, depending on the scenario.
Also, if you are switching designs, it is not going to be an immediate quick fix anyway, you need to spend time on your website. I know Joomla makes everything seem easy but it still takes a bit of work to setup. Besides, changing the positions yourself takes 1 or 2 minutes in the index.php file
I know what you are saying and is seemingly a good idea, but an idealistic Plug and Play environment just isn't going to happen.
