Image runaround on front page

Not sure if this is a theme questions or general Joomla question. Maybe someone here iwll have some thoughts....
When I create a news article I often insert an image. If I set the image alignment property to 'left', that gives me nice text runaround; the accompanying text starts at the top of the image. The emabe appears 'embedded' in the text.
However, if I set this article to show on the front page, when it is displayed in a narrow column (one of the bottom two article positions in SnowFire, for example, the text will displayn in a very narrow margin beside the image.
The only way around this I've found is to place the image by itself and have text start beneath. Not ideal.
Is there any way to have image alignments change when the article is viewed on the front page?
