[closed] Converting a 2.5 Joomla template to a 3.4 Joomla template

    • I am using a Joomla template on a 2.5 site. This template WAS NOT designed by RocketTheme, however, it is a Gantry template. The developer developed it to be used with Gantry. This is how I first learned of Gantry and of RocketTheme themselves. I really liked the ease of use of Gantry, and have since purchased other themes from RocketTheme.

The site that I am using this template on is as mentioned before a Joomla 2.5 site. Support for 2.5 ended over a year ago, so it has to be upgraded to 3.x. However, I really like this template and would like to continue using it. This particular template is a patriotic theme and the website that is being used for is a military site. The theme fits perfect with the subject.

Since this is a Gantry enabled template, I thought that I would check here to see if there was anyone here who could help me convert this to be used with Joomla 3.x? I don't know what differences there are between 2.5 and 3.x, if there is PHP differences, or something else. So I am hoping that the developers of Gantry or someone with more knowledge that I have could help me figure out what I need to do to get the template to work.

      Thank you.

      Daryl

    • Hmm...I've done a ton of conversions of RocketTheme Jx.xx templates to J3.x versions but I've never tried a gantry based template from another template provider.

The #1 !!!! tool you need is a free copy of Akeeba backup .
With this you can try all sorts of things and now you can always go back to square ONE

This is my work-flow (based on Gantry 4) to upgrade from Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.4.x (current version is 3.4.8):
      1. Backup your site with a free copy of Akeeba backup
      2. You must meet these System Requirements for J3.4.x:
        • Apache 2.2+ or Microsoft IIS 7
        • PHP 5.3.10+ (PHP 5.4+ Recommended)
        • MySQL 5.1+
        • Joomla 3.3+
      3. Verify that all Rockettheme products are the latest versions (Gantry, Rockettheme extensions and Template). Update any that aren't and clear server cache and browser cache. As for the Rockettheme template you are using in the upgrade make sure it's compatible with Joomla 3.3.x Joomla Templates Compatibility Matrix . You can check all current version numbers at Admin -> Extend or Extensions -> Extension Manager -> Manage.
      4. Verify all your 3rd-party extensions are up to date and that they are compatible with J3.3.x
      5. Update your Joomla 2.5 instance to the latest maintenance release (currently 2.5.28).
      6. Make sure your database schema is updated to latest version 2.5.28 by going to: Admin -> Extend or Extensions -> Extension Manager -> Database . If your schema is not up to date like in the following image, click the Fix button.
      7. Uninstall any Packages that are no longer needed or will not be migrating to Joomla 3.
      8. Go to Extensions → Plugin Manager and enter Remember Me into the Filter and press enter. Disable the Remember Me plugin by clicking the green check mark and making it a red circle.
      9. Using PhPMyAdmin console check that your Assets table is correct. See Fixing the assets table
      10. Backup your site again.
      11. Go to Components → Joomla Update. (It should say no updates found.)
      12. Click on the Options button at the top right corner. Select "Short Term Support" from the drop-down for Update server
      13. Click Save & Close.
      14. You will then see your Installed Joomla Version, the Latest Joomla! version and the URL for the update package.
      15. Click "Install the Update".
      16. Go to Extensions → Extension Manager → Database and click Fix if needed.
      17. From the Extension Manager go to Discover and see if there are any extensions to install
      18. Enable Remember Me from the Plugin Manager.
      19. Clear all back end and front browser caches.
      20. TEST EVERYTHING to make sure all the parts work.
      21. Backup your site again.
      22. Go to Content → Article Manager → Options button → Editing Layout tab and set the Save History to Yes.
      23. Install your new template or any other other extensions you need. From experience I've found a reinstall of Gantry and RokNavMenu can save you some grief. Back up often.
      24. Configure them. Back up often.
      25. Test everything. Back up often.
      26. Backup your site with a free copy of Akeeba backup

    • Dan,

I went through your documentation and I made progress, however, I have one issue that I'm hoping you, or someone else on this forum can help me with.

I'm working on my personal machine using WAMP, so I don't have a link in which I can share. So, I'll post some screen shots.

If I have RokNavMenu installed, all I get is an error:

This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.

If I remove it, I get most of my page, just a big error where the menu should be:

This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.

It seems to me that RokNavMenu is not compatible, but I am on the latest verison, 2.0.8.

I am wondering if Gantry needs to be upgraded? The version that I am on is v4.1.29 and it say's that I am on the lastest version. However, I see Gantry v5.2.12 is out. Should I upgrade to it? If so, how can I upgrade?

      Thanks

      Daryl

      So a few thoughts:

      - RokNavMenu is a standalone module so should work fine on non-RocketTheme templates
      - just in case uninstall it and then reinstall it
      - Download a FRESH copy the latest version of Gantry -> http://gantry-framework.org/download and reinstall it.
      - I'm concerned that non-RocketTheme template might be using some conflicting overrides but try the above and then report back.
