Can RT add article list page example into the templates

Posted 8 years 10 months ago
    • Most of the pages of my sites fall into 3 categories:
      1 - Homepage
      2 - Article/Item List page
      3 - Article page

I think this basic structure applies to not only my site but most of the websites out there. RT templates are great but all of them miss page example for the 2nd category. The closest thing I can find is Blog page. However I don't like the idea of putting big chunk of texts from different articles on a same page(like this one , it is obviously not good for mobile devices), unfortunately, most, if not all, of the templates' blog pages are like this. The article list I desire contains article titles only with some meta information like Author, time, hits, image, introtext etc. (This page of mine is one of the examples.)

Yes, this is not hard to do, but being a design rookie, everytime I build a new site, I have to put a lot of efforts on googling beautiful article list examples and imitate them on my site. In contrary, for the other parts of my website using RT template, I just need to change the actual content and leave most of the design as it is (I think this is what templates are for, isn't it?). As a long term user of RT templates, I really wish RT can put this article list page examples into the templates (along with other page examples like blog, 404, contact, etc.)

    • This is really a Joomla question, no we won't be adding it to the templates.

menu manager > new > menu item type (article - category list) - pick category - SAVE - that's it.

    • For blog page, isn't it also
menu manger > new > menu itemtype (article - category blog) - pick category - SAVE - that's it ????
Then why did you add a blog page into the template in the first place?
I think it is because you as template designer wanted to set an example for us users.

Look at this page where I change its menu item type to category, it looks awful and doesn't go along with other design of the templates. This is where we users have to do a lot of design and CSS tweaking jobs to make it look better. I was saying if you already set a "blog" page as example, why not add another example of "category" page? It will be good. If you can only set one of the two, why choose "blog" over "category"? The latter is more popular and more user friendly.

    • I don't think that page looks awful at all. In Gantry 5 template we no longer do any html override of standard joomla output because it's just too much of a maintenance overhead (whereby joomla change things between releases). The template demo is just that - many other things are possible with Joomla but we can't demo them all. If you want to change the styling of that page then it can simply be done using custom CSS.
