SOLVED Articles look like front page

Hi guys,
I'm sure I'm missing something stupid here, but when I create links to articles on my Cerulean site, they open on a page that includes the front page RokGallery. The URLs look identical to other articles which don't exhibit this behavior, so I'm thinking is has something to do with the module assignment, but for the life of me I can't figure it out.

Okay, I was able to get it to show up without the FP RokGallery. In order to do so, I had to create a menu item linked to the article. After doing that and clicking on the link, the page showed without the gallery. I could delete the menu item, but the page still displays as intended.
What's causing this behavior?

For posterity's sake, this appears to be the recommended way to link to articles directly while controling the displayed modules:
docs.joomla.org/How_to_control_module_di...le_with_no_menu_item
In essense, you create a dummy menu and a menu entry for each page layout/module combination.
