would the Shared server handle my site --

    • hi best community members

i was wondering now -since i almost finished my site which is gonna be the first site provided for my university students- would the shared server handle such traffic ..
i think by day one i will have 300 students registering .. and in the end of the week about 1000 at least ..
im not sure how many min/hours/ will they spend browing the site depending if they like it .. but im afraid if they want to .. the site will not be able to handle thant number and it will be down
do i need a Dedicated server ? its a bit expensive :-\ and for now and without the university support
i hope i dont need to have one
      my hosting company is www.hostmonster.com
      ,500 Gigabytes of Hosting Space
      15,000 Gigs of Transfer
      MySQL version 5.0.45-community-log
      PHP version 5.2.5

and the support is amazing ..
thanks in advanced and i appreciate it ..

    • it really all depends on when your visitors visit ..

you cold easily have 100,000 page views a day on a shared server if those 100,000 page views happened across the entire day and not all at once - as you published a news story for example

if you publish a news story which then triggers the traffic then you've got to look at options - maybe ..

if you're running a forum with members online always hitting refresh - then it all depends on how many you've got online

i would recommend speaking with your host and finding out how easy it is to upgrade and they'll probably tell you its very easy ...

then put a notice up on the frontpage and every page of your site telling your visitors that you're still in beta and the next few weeks are about making the site fully optimised so it may be slow but it will be getting better

you dont want to start on a dedicated server and find your only using 10% of it - start on shared and move up to waht is right over a few weeks - it's a better option

    • Be careful with hostmonster and community forums. I almost chose them as my host till I read the terms then called them. If anyone swears or anything or puts anything racy on the community (counts if its SPAM) they can and more than likely will terminate your account because it's Utah law. Bluehost and hostmonster are the same company and it applies to both so please be careful in this regard.
